The 50 Best Restaurants in the Caribbean 2020

The number of world-class Caribbean restaurants continues to multiply, making this landmark selection, which first launched back in 2013, more and more difficult each year.

The Caribbean food sector continues to send a strong message to the world that this is, truly, one of the world’s great food regions, with arguably the most diverse cuisine on the planet and an uncanny range of styles, philosophies

It’s also wonderful to see a region-wide commitment to local sourcing and, most importantly, to authenticity, across the Caribbean gastronomic scene.

This year’s edition of the 50 Best Caribbean Restaurants, the product of hundreds of meals across the far reaches of the Caribbean, retains our core criteria: food, service and ambience, the three pillars which are the foundation of any great restaurant.

Because meals that are truly great should instantly become great memories, whether they’re at a toes-in-the-sand beach spot or a culinary laboratory.

“The Caribbean’s culinary scene is hotter than ever, and this year’s edition of the 50 best Caribbean restaurants is our most diverse list since we first launched the 50 Best back in 2013,” said Alexander Britell, editor and publisher of Caribbean Journal. “These 50 restaurants exemplify the exciting gastronomic adventure that is today’s Caribbean culinary world. It’s a portfolio of very different but equally outstanding dining destinations.”

Congratulations to this year’s selections!

Sheer Rocks, Antigua The Caribbean’s new number one restaurant is a marvel, from the most stunning location of any eatery in the region (day or night) to a miraculous menu that takes Michelin-style menus conceived by Chef Simon Christey-French  to truly admirable, locally-focused sourcing. What’s most impressive, though, is the restaurant’s commitment to culinary education and training. Because it’s not just a world-class restaurant in the Caribbean. It’s a truly Caribbean restaurant, headed by wunderkind Antiguan chef Jamal Warner.

Saint Lucia Gets New American Airlines Flights From Chicago

American Airlines’ winter expansion has now reached Saint Lucia, with the launch of a new nonstop route from Chicago.

American’s newest Caribbean route will be operating weekly on Saturdays, with flights between Chicago O’Hare and Hewanorra International Airport.

“We are pleased to welcome residents of Midwestern states to Saint Lucia, where they can experience our renowned cultural experiences, bask in our perfect weather and enjoy a warm welcome from our local Saint Lucian residents,” said Saint Lucia Tourism Minister Dominic Fedee. “American Airlines passengers now can fly direct to Saint Lucia from Chicago, Charlotte, Miami and Philadelphia, and we look forward to continuing our strong partnership with the airline.”

The flights depart Chicago at 8:20 AM and arrive in Saint Lucia at 3:50 PM local time.

The return flights leave Hewanorra at 4:47 PM local time and arrive at Chicago O’Hare at 9:20 central time.

Through November, American provided more than 101,600 seats to Saint Lucia, accounting for 43 percent of the total seats to the island from the United States market.

The Caribbean hotel sector is, in a word, buzzing. New hotels seem to be popping up every week, and it’s not just the traditional hotel hubs. Sure, there are new Caribbean hotels on the way in places like the Dominican Republic and Cancun, but a wave of developers are betting big on destinations from Dominica to Antigua to St Martin, and just about everywhere in between.

Here are 15 hotels, all of which either just opened or are planning to open in the calendar year 2020, all of which we can’t wait to check in to this year.

Hotel Barriere Le Carl Gustaf, St Barth The most-anticipated luxury hotel opening of 2020 is the rebirth of an iconic St Barth hotel. Barriere’s brand-new Gustavia stunner will have 23 rooms (including a pair of junior suites and 13 cottages), with inspired designs by Gilles & Boissier. It’s a major addition to the heart of what is one of the coolest towns in all of the Caribbean. Barriere calls it an “ode to Caribbean five-star charm in St Barth.” We call it the hottest opening of 2020, set for the first quarter.
