Tropical Storm Dorian was strengthening Tuesday evening as it headed toward Puerto Rico, according to the latest update from the National Hurricane Center in Miami.
The center of Tropical Storm Dorian was heading northwest on Tuesday night, set to pass over or near western and central Puerto Rico on Wednesday and move near the eastern Dominican Republic on Wednesday night.
The NHC said the storm, which had maximum sustained winds of 50 mph, could reach hurricane strength as it neared Puerto Rico.
Indeed, Dorian is forecast to be near hurricane strength when it approaches Puerto Rico on Wednesday, with some weakening expected after the storm passes across the mountainous areas of Puerto Rico.
On Thursday and Friday, the center of the storm was slated to move near the Turks and Caicos and the southeastern Bahamas.
The storm is expected to re-strengthen on Thursday and Friday as it approaches the Turks and Caicos and Bahamas.
For now, a Hurricane Watch is in effect for Puerto Rico, while tropical storm warnings are in effect for Puerto Rico, Vieques, Culebra, the USVI and the eastern portion of the Dominican Republic.
A hurricane watch means that hurricane conditions are possible within the affected area over the next 48 hours.
A tropical storm warning means tropical storm conditions are possible in the area within a 36-hour period.
