This Puerto Rico Airport Keeps Breaking Records

By the Caribbean Journal staff

An airport in Puerto Rico is breaking all kinds of passenger records right now — but it’s not the one you might think.

Aguadilla, the increasingly popular hub on the northwestern corner of the island of Puerto Rico, just set another new record for passenger traffic last month, according to new data from the Puerto Rico Tourism Company.

Aguadilla handled 63,223 passengers in April, far outpacing the previous record of 46,308 set last year.

Indeed, traffic in Aguadilla in the first four months of 2019 totaled 251,898 passengers, an increase of almost 100,000 passengers compared to the same period in 2018 — traffic the Tourism Company called “never before seen in Aguadilla.”

If this breakneck pace continues, it would make 2019 the third consecutive year of record-breaking traffic at Rafael Hernandez Airport.

“This demonstrates the reception on the part of the airlines to the attractions of the Porta del Sol region — and provides an additional boost to the economy of Porta del Sol, Porta Caribe and the center and north of the island,” said Carla Campos, executive director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company.

Indeed, it’s a welcome boost for a corner of Puerto Rico long held in high regard by intrepid travelers and adventure lovers.

The improvement is part of wider growth for Puerto Rico’s fast-expanding tourism sector.

American Airlines Is Expanding Its Flights to St Kitts

St Kitts is in the midst of an airlift boom, and now the world’s largest airline is adding another new flight to the destination.

American Airlines will launch a second weekly nonstop flight from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport to St. Kitts on Wednesdays, Caribbean Journal has learned.

This new flight will complement the carrier’s existing non-stop Saturday service from JFK, with service set to begin Dec. 18.

“I am very pleased to welcome the addition of this mid-week flight by American Airlines,” said St Kitts Tourism Minister Lindsey Grant. “It’s wonderful to receive this additional service from a valued partner, which provides visitors and Diaspora alike with more ways to get to island from our primary source market. This is a testament to American’s confidence in our tourism product.”

American Airlines will operate the flight utilizing a 176-seat Boeing 757 with 16 business class seats through February, and then a 160-seat Boeing 738 with 16 business class seats with the following schedule.

“The timing of this additional flight is particularly significant, as American just launched summer non-stop service from Dallas this past weekend and expanded twice-daily service from Miami International Airport to 5 days a week in 2017,” said Racquel Brown, CEO of the St Kitts Tourism Authority. “The addition of mid-week service year-round from the New York metropolitan area indicates a growth in the marketplace concurrent with our marketing initiatives.”

In addition to the new Wednesday non-stop service from JFK, American also serves St Kitts nonstop on Saturdays from JFK and Charlotte Douglas International Airport year-round.

American further provides year-round, non-stop daily service to St. Kitts from MIA, with twice-daily flights operating five times weekly.

St Kitts is known for its charm and its natural beauty.

Already for the first four months of 2019, St Kitts is reporting a system-wide increase in air passenger arrivals of 14.5 percent as compared to the same period in 2018.

From all North American carriers, St. Kitts’ air passenger arrivals increased 17.2 percent for January through April 2019 as compared to the same period in 2018.

“This new service is part of our specific strategy to grow our tourism industry by building out airlift from select target gateways with our air partners to support the destination’s expanding hotel product,” Brown said.

By the Caribbean Journal staff

Sugar Factory American Brasserie, the eatery-confectionary shop, is opening its first location in The Bahamas.

The popular full-service cafe and candy shop will open at the Baha Mar resort in 2020, according to a statement.

The outpost will include a cafe, confectionary shop, retail shop, a carousel bar overlooking the resort’s iconic fountains and CandyOcean, an aquatic-themed “Instagram experience.”

“We are thrilled to welcome Sugar Factory to Baha Mar, adding one of the world’s favorite confectionary shops to the collection of spectacular culinary offerings at the resort destination,” said Graeme Davis, President, Baha Mar. “This sweet treat aligns perfectly with the bright color palette and entertaining amenities for our guests. We look forward to introducing CandyOcean by Sugar Factory and the new menu items exclusively available at Baha Mar, in a way that will be uniquely Bahamian and entirely unexpected.”

The Sugar Factory candy shop will have more than 500 types of candy, with a cafe offering coffees, hot chocolate and doughnuts, among other treats.

As for the brasserie component, the dining room will include capacity for 300 guests, along with 30 seats at an outdoor bar and gazebo, with a menu ranging from steaks to pizzas.

“When Baha Mar was first announced, we knew we wanted to bring a Sugar Factory location there. Now, one of the hottest new resort destinations to visit in the world, Baha Mar’s cheerful and vibrant setting is the perfect place for our lively atmosphere and playful menu,” said Sugar Factory Owner, Charissa Davidovici. “The new restaurant will be unique to its tropical location, yet stay true to the iconic and signature charm of Sugar Factory.”
