Your Own Private Escape in Bermuda

By the Caribbean Journal staff

Bermuda has long been an exclusive getaway — but now a new destination has upped the ante.

It’s called Hawkins Island, and this new retreat offers the best of Bermudian hospitality with a private-island touch.

Hawkins Island has completed its first phase, launching rentals of the island’s Main Villa and Guard House, a luxe getaway that comes with its own private chef.

Hawkins’ main villa sleeps eight guests across a two-bedroom master suite and two one-bedroom units, while the guard house accommodates another eight guests.

The 25-acre Hawkins Island is set in Bermuda’s Great Sound — and it once belonged to the Royal Navy.

Now, it’s your own private escape in Bermuda.

Sea Breeze Beach House: A New All-Inclusive in Barbados

There’s another kind of feel on the south coast of Barbados; a different energy, a different light.

There’s a special dynamism down here, fueled by the St Lawrence Gap, then washed down by the waves.

It’s a special corner of Barbados and a destination within itself.

And tucked away here on one of the island’s most stunning stretches of sand is a very exciting new place to stay.

The design is fresh and inventive.

This is Ocean Hotels’ Sea Breeze Beach House, a relaunch (and transformation) of the old Sea Breeze that’s turned what was an old-school Barbados hotel and turned it into a chic, refined but effortlessly cool beach hotel.

And did we mention it’s all-inclusive?

The design is the first thing that stands out at the south coast’s newest addition, bright and colorful with the feeling of a surf resort — yes, it’s contemporary, but it feels right at home on the sand in Christ Church.

And while it has a boutique ambience, there’s a broad offering here, from six restaurants to three pools to five bars, with the signature Mahogany restaurant.

You’d never believe Sea Breeze, which is holding its grand relaunch in April, has a total of 122 units — it feels so much smaller, so much more intimate. This feels like the next hip hotel in Barbados — not an all-inclusive.

The rooms are great, too, with a barefoot-chic, airy look that is accentuated by the presence of a wave of local art from Barbados luminaries like John Farmer.

It’s part of what is a property-wide commitment to making things Bajan.

And then there’s the beach — two of them, in fact, making every day into the quintessential beach day — without the big crowds.

Ultimately, it’s exactly what it says it is: an all-inclusive beach house.

And that’s a pretty cool combination.

Carnival Cruise Line has taken delivery of the 26th ship in its fleet: Carnival Horizon.

The new 3,954-passenger ship will sail a summer schedule of four-day Bermuda and eight-day Caribbean cruises from New York before shifting to Miami for a year-round program of six and eight-day Caribbean cruises beginning in September.

That’s along with Guy Fieri’s Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse and even a portfolio of four craft beers brewed right on board the ship.

It’s the second ship in Carnival’s new Vista-class range.

VIDEO: Aruba’s Adults-Only Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort

By Guy Britton

One of the world’s best beaches. Impeccable service. Forward-thinking design. Modern luxury.

And oh yeah, it’s an adults-only, too.

This is the Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort, the coveted adults-only resort in Aruba that’s our favorite place to stay on the island.

While the story certainly begins on the world-class Eagle Beach, the Bucuti & Tara hits all the marks, from a high-tech check-in process to an impressive dining program that’s particularly good for guests looking for organic, natural food and even gluten-free cuisine.

And then there’s the hotel’s commitment to being green, with a broad eco program that ranges from solar water heating to energy-efficient rooms.

It all adds up to a truly impressive resort, one that sets a standard for the whole region.
