Delta Launches New Daily Flights to Kingston, Jamaica

By the Caribbean Journal staff

Kingston is heating up.

Another major air carrier has launched new service to Jamaica’s capital, this time with Delta Air Lines launching daily flights from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport.

Delta is operating the new service on Boeing 737-800 aircraft, according to a statement from the company.

The new route comes as several carriers have set their eyes on the capital in the last several years.

It’s a boost for Jamaica’s efforts to position the capital as a tourism destination, a push that is being helped by a major project to build an AC Hotel in the capital, the result of a partnership between Sandals and Marriott.

Another carrier, Spirit, is planning to launch flights from Orlando to Kingston in March.

$100 Million Saint Lucia Airport Redevelopment Moving Forward

By the Caribbean Journal staff

A major redevelopment of Saint Lucia’s Hewanorra International Airport is moving forward, officials said this week.

The country’s parliament has voted to borrow $100 million for the project, whose plan is set to be unveiled in the coming days.

The project includes the construction of a new terminal building with state-of-the art facilities, restaurants, shops and executive lounges.

The existing terminal will be converted to accommodate fixed-base operators.

“We have exhausted the current capacity of the Hewanorra International Airport, and the redevelopment project is part of our government’s broader plan to expand the island’s room stock by 50 percent in the next eight years,” said Saint Lucia Tourism Minister Dominic Fedee.

The loan is being financed by the Taiwanese government, which is also providing technical support on the project.

“This is a welcome development and great news for the tourism industry. The SLTA continues to negotiate for more airlift into the island and having a new, modern airport to leverage with airline partners is a huge asset,” said Acting CEO of the Saint Lucia Tourism Authority Tiffany Howard.

Construction of the project is slated to begin early in 2019.

The goal is to have the facility fully operational by the end of 2020.

VIDEO: In St Kitts, The Art of the Beach Hotspot

By Alexander Britell and Guy Britton

There’s a way the sea gets silver, the contours of the dock and the chairs merge with the waves and the rum becomes one with the hour.

Here on the southeast peninsula of St Kitts, that’s about once every day.

The tucked-away Salt Plage beach bar specializes in this sort of perfection, with just the right cocktail of high design and extreme leisure.

It’s easily the hottest spot in St Kitts, the must-visit happy hour and a place that epitomizes the sophisticated, luxuriously relaxed ambience of the island’s Christophe Harbour development.

Salt Plage first opened its doors in 2014, a strikingly-designed bar built in part from the foundations of an old salt warehouse dating back to the 1940s, one that stored salt mined from the salt ponds of the peninsula.

Today, it’s a gold mine, filled with beach lovers and rum aficionados looking to stylishly capture the sunset.

There’s something for everyone here, whether you want to indulge in fine aged rums or the bar’s signature Salt Plage Jumbie or nibble on conch fritters or coconut fried shrimp.

Travelers are finding a new energy in St Kitts, a new level of luxury, a new identity, and it’s all centered here on the southeast peninsula, where the Park Hyatt St Kitts is just a few minutes away.

The views are truly remarkable.

St Kitts has rapidly become a beach bar destination in its own right — but Salt Plage is the crown jewel.
