For years, it was one of Dominica’s signature places to stay: a high-level eco resort on an island renowned for its unsurpassed natural beauty.
And now, less than two years after the storms of 2017, the legendary Caribbean eco resort is back.
The transformed Jungle Bay, now in a new location on the southwestern corner of the island of Dominica, officially welcomed its first new guests with a soft opening this weekend.
What the new Jungle Bay’s villas look like.
“The Jungle Bay family is excited to begin hosting guests at our new wellness property in Soufriere, Dominica,” Jungle Bay developer Sam Raphael told Caribbean Journal. “Our proximity to hot springs, some of the region’s best diving as well as yoga overlooking the Caribbean Sea are highlights of the new location.”
The new property is a collection of eco-friendly luxury villas, with a decor “inspired by nature,” according to the resort.

This month, 30 units are open, a mix of two room types: full villas as well as villa rooms. (Jungle Bay will hold its official reopening and “vine-cutting” on June 30, according to a spokesperson for Jungle Bay.
The plan is to expand further next year, with more villas and even a new zipline at the property.

All of the property’s amenities, which range from a pair of yoga studios to an infinity pool and an activities center, are opening this month.
The historic property, which was the site of a famous lime plantation in the late 19th century, has everything from a banana plantation to a host of easily accessible walking trails.

Jungle Bay’s long-awaited return is a significant step for Dominica’s tourism renaissance, which has seen the return of many of hits top hotels, from the ultra-luxe Secret Bay (which is also expanding) to the popular Fort Young in the heart of Dominica’s capital, Roseau.

St Kitts’ airlift boom has continued with the launch of a new weekly route from Dallas-Fort Worth.
American Airlines has begun operating the new nonstop service with a once-weekly flight on Saturdays.
The flight, which takes a little less than 5.5 hours, is part of a growing airlift network for St Kitts, which is seeing surging visitor arrivals so far this year.
The new seasonal summer service is being operated on an Airbus A319 aircraft, according to American Airlines.
American also just announced plans to add a second weekly flight from New York to St Kitts beginning this winter.

The greatest hotel in the US Virgin Islands is set for a comeback.
The Ritz-Carlton, St Thomas, long that island’s leading resort and arguably the flagship hotel in the wider destination, is set to return this fall, Caribbean Journal has learned.
The hotel, set on a 30-acre beachfront estate on the southeastern corner of St Thomas, is now accepting reservations for stays beginning Dec. 1, 2019, according to the property’s Web site.

“We look forward to welcoming guests to our renewed resort,” the property said in a statement.
Its return will be a serious jolt of energy to a destination that has already been making an impressive tourism recovery since the storms of 2017.
The resort, set on the sand with a marvelous view of the nearby island of St John, has 180 guest rooms, each with an ocean-view balcony; a luxury spa; four eateries; an aquatic center including an infinity pool and a kids pool; and both indoor and outdoor event space.

The rebuilt property on St Thomas’ Great Bay had already completed several large-scale improvement projects prior to its closure in the fall of 2017; those include new elevators, new paint and other upgrades.
The news comes a few months after another top USVI resort, the Westin St John Resort, officially reopened its doors.
The reopening will add to a strong portfolio of both resorts and boutique hotels in the tri-island destination, from the Point Pleasant and Bolongo Bay in St Thomas to the celebrated The Fred boutique hotel in St Croix, among others.
Ritz-Carlton has a portfolio of six resorts in the wider Caribbean region.
