Eastern Airlines Is Launching Flights to the Dominican Republic

The revived Eastern Airlines is back in the Caribbean.

The new iteration of the once-legendary carrier is set to launch expanded Caribbean flights in December with service to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Eastern Airlines will be launching twice-weekly flights from both Boston and Miami to Santo Domingo.

On Dec. 17, Eastern will be operating flights from Santo Domingo to Boston on Thursdays and Saturdays and from Boston to Santo Domingo on Mondays and Saturdays.

On Dec. 21, Eastern will launch Santo Domingo-Miami flights on Mondays and Tuesdays, with Miami-Santo Domingo service on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Eastern will also be launching flights from Santo Domingo to Philadelphia on Tuesdays and Fridays, with service kicking off on Dec. 15.

This summer, Eastern Airlines kicked off its Caribbean service with seasonal flights between New York and Port-au-Prince, Haiti that are not currently operating.

The “new” Eastern relaunched with the original Eastern Air Lines’ intellectual property, trademarks and logos (and even the carrier’s original callsign) in January 2020.

The company is a completely different one from the Miami-based carrier that was a dominant player in the hemisphere for almost seven decades until ceasing operations in 1991.

In 2011, another company looked to revive the Eastern brand before launching charter service to the Caribbean and eventually folding; eventually, the brand and intellectual property were pouched by a new company in 2018.

For now, the carrier’s focus is connecting North and South America (and the Caribbean), with the Dominican Republic joining destinations like Ecuador, Brazil and Guyana, among others.

Even amid the current realities of travel, Santo Domingo continues to see strong interest from a number of carriers, from American Airlines to United.

LIAT Begins Caribbean Relaunch

Caribbean airline LIAT has resumed its commercial schedule, Caribbean Journal has learned.

The carrier, which is currently under administration, will be operating flights to a “limited number of destinations,” according to a company statement.

That will include flights on five days per week to seven destinations, including Antigua, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Saint Lucia, St Kitts and St Vincent.

“The limited schedule of flights will return connectivity to these destinations which were impacted by the airline’s suspension of commercial services,” LIAT said in a statement.

The carrier will be adding other destinations to its December schedule in the near future, according to the company.

LIAT is being restructured following a decision by the government of Antigua and Barbuda to reorganize the airline.

Canadian travel giant Sunwing is planning a relaunch of several routes to Cancun beginning next month, Caribbean Journal has learned.

The company will be relaunching service to Cancun from Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton beginning Jan. 9.

All of those routes will operate weekly on Saturdays.

“We are thrilled to be resuming flight service from Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton,” said Andrew Dawson, President of Tour Operations for Sunwing. “Western Canada is a very important market for us and we’re committed to providing our customers on the west coast with convenient vacation packages to sunny destinations. We’re looking forward to bringing more Canadians back to paradise under our wing, and being able to offer more vacation choices as the season progresses.”

It’s part of a broader Mexico relaunch for Sunwing, which will also be resuming service from Edmonton to both Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlan beginning Dec. 26.

Both of those routes will be operating weekly on Saturdays.

Sunwing said it would be operating the routes using a “combination of seats contracted from third-party carriers as well as Sunwing Airlines.
