This Caribbean City’s New Hotel-Museum

 

It’s the first of its kind in the Dominican Republic’s capital of Santo Domingo: a hotel-museum.

The redesigned Hotel Beaterio is the latest addition to one of the gems of the Caribbean’s cultural offering, the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo.

The hotel has reopened following a major renovation project, offering guests the chance to stay in a converted 16th-century convent.

The 11-room El Beaterio explores a rich history in the area, including former residents of the convent like Sor Leonor de Ovando and Doña Elvira de Mendoza, the first poets of the New World.

St Lucia’s “Good Food” Revolution

 

A new project in St Lucia is aiming to revolutionize food production on the island.

The nonprofit organization RISE’s Good Food Revolution Project is looking to remove toxic chemicals and potentially harmful GMOs from the St Lucian food chain.

It’s also a call to action for farmers, retailers and consumers to grow, buy and consume organic.

Most recently, the country’s Ministry of Sustainable Development, Energy, Science and Technology, RISE and the Ministry of Agricculture to host an organic farmers training workshop.

The first block of training on the island will cover three months, training food growers in advanced organic practical techniques and developing organic plots.

The island’s Good Food Revolution Project has received funding from the UNDP GEF SGP, Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and the Saint Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association.

Light Earthquake Causes Shaking in Eastern Caribbean

A 4.9-magnitude earthquake caused light shaking around the eastern Caribbean on Sunday morning, according to data from the United States Geological Survey.

The quake, which struck at around 9:48 AM local time, was at a depth of 36 kilometres.

Its epicentre was about 15 kilometers east of Codrington, Barbuda, and about 118 kilometers east-northeast of Basseterre, St Kitts.

The quake was felt as far north as St Maarten and as far south as Guadeloupe.

The strongest reports of shaking were in Antigua.

There were no reports of damage or injuries.
