Ultra-Fast Internet Could Be Coming to Jamaica

Will Jamaica soon to be home to ultra-fast Internet?

That’s the plan by Digicel Group and Huawei Technologies, which recently tested a new technology known as XG-PON on their new fiber network which delivers speeds up to 10,000 Mbps.

XG-PON, which stands for 10Gpbs Passive Optical Network, creates speeds never before seen in the Caribbean region.

The test was conducted in Digicel’s lab in downtown Kingston using Digicel’s new fibre-to-the-home network.

The speeds would bring Jamaica in line with countries like South Korea and Singapore in terms of broadband speeds.

“This was a very exciting trial and we were blown away by the speeds reached and how simple it is to move to these speeds when the region needs it,” said John Suranyi, CEO of Digicel Play Caribbean and Central America. “This was a very exciting trial and we were blown away by the speeds reached and how simple it is to move to these speeds when the region needs it. This shows how we can evolve towards Multi Gigabit speeds as and when our customers demand it and not only puts Digicel Jamaica head and shoulders above all competition, but also places the region alongside the broadband global power houses such as Singapore and Korea.”

Rum Journal: A Great New Rum From Don Q

The rum world is changing.

The sector is growing fast, and more and more new players are entering the market.

That’s great for the spirit, as more people begin to see rum for what it is — the world’s most diverse spirit.

What that’s also accomplishing is leading more established rum brands to continue to raise their game: and that’s precisely what’s happened with one of the world’s top rum producers: Puerto Rico’s Don Q.

The company has long been the most popular rum in its home island of Puerto Rico, and over the years has released some stellar aged expressions — most notably the Don Q Gran Añejo.

But Don Q is now focusing on attaining a new level of quality, from new blends to special finishes.

That brings us to the company’s newest rum, Don Q 2005 Signature Release Single Barrel Rum.

The limited-edition rum is aged for 10 years and is the company’s first-ever single barrel expression, with the first offering including 3,000 cases to the US and Puerto Rico, with a 2007 single-barrel variant slated for 2017.

So what’s it like?

The rum has a classic amber color, with an aroma of caramel, candied fruit and cane.

The flavor profile is superb, with notes of vanilla, coconut, tropical fruit and a thin layer of spiciness.

The finish is ultra-smooth, with a whisper of citrus peel.

Remember, this is a Puerto Rican rum, meaning greatness comes with lightness. The best rums from the island are never heavy — emphasizing delicacy, shape and refinement.

It’s an exceptional new rum, and a welcome reminder of the great things Puerto Rican rums can achieve.

Southwest Airlines Expanding Cancun Service

Southwest Airlines will be filing an application with the US Department of Transportation to offer new daily flights to Cancun, the company announced.

The daily flights will operate year-round between Los Angeles and Cancun.

“We’re ready to go and if we get the authority by the end of June, we’ll immediately begin selling the flights and operate them commencing in November,” Kelly said at the Company’s Annual Meeting of Shareholders held this week in Chicago. “The Southwest Effect is taking hold in international markets where we already serve, and we expect these popular leisure markets will resonate with our loyal California Customers.”

Southwest is also planning to add daily flights from Los Angeles to Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos.

Southwest has been rapidly expanding its service to the Caribbean region in the last year.

“We carry more people both to-and-from California every day — as well within the Golden State — than anyone else with a value that no one else can even approach,” said Andrew Watterson, Southwest’s Senior Vice President of Network and Revenue.
