The New SLS Cancun Hotel Opens This Week

The newest SLS hotel in the wider Caribbean is opening its doors this week, Caribbean Journal has learned. 

Parent company Accor’s highly anticipated SLS Cancun will begin welcoming guests Feb. 10, according to its Web site. 

The 45-unit luxury boutique hotel is set in the Puerto Cancun development, which is home to a marina and a Tom Weiskopf-designed golf course and centered around a private club.

The hotel’s signature restaurant is Leynia by Chef Jose Icardi, an Argentinian grill “inspired by flavors from Japan.”

That’s along with a poolside lounge called Altitude.

The SLS is also home to a spa and a lobby cocktail bar designed by Piero Lissoni. 

The hotel is the second SLS hotel in the wider Caribbean, joining the existing SLS Baha Mar on Cable Beach in Nassau, The Bahamas. 

It’s also the first SLS hotel to launch under the Accor umbrella; last November, Accor took full ownership of all sbe hotel brands, including SLS, Delano, Mondrian and Hyde.

That came after the company had initially purchased a significant stake in see in 2018. 

Cancun has been open for tourism since last summer. 

In order to help travelers meet the new CDC requirements, the SLS Cancun will be offering free on-site testing.

A New Luxury Resort Is Coming to St Maarten in April

St Maarten’s most anticipated new resort in years is set for an April debut, Caribbean Journal has learned. 

The Morgan, a new resort in Simpson Bay, is slated to open its doors on April 1, the property confirmed. 

The property will begin taking reservations on Feb. 15. 

The 124-unit property will have a mix of rooms and suites, along with a rooftop observation deck with unmatched views of landing jets at St Maarten’s Princess Juliana International Airport. 

The crisply-designed guest rooms, outfitted in a mix of blues and whites, will include spa-style bathrooms with glass walk in showers, floor-to-ceiling windows opening to private balconies or terraces and free Wi-Fi.

That’s along with a swim-up pool bar, a range of cabanas and a centerpiece beach-style infinity pool. 

The cabanas will be unique in St Maarten, with lounge-style couches, smart TVs, lush landscaping and paddle fans, among other perks.

Dining concepts will include the aforementioned Bar M pool bar and a restaurant and bar called Salt; the dining program will be led by former Top Chef contestant and Caribbean culinary leader Ron Duprat.

The Cove at Atlantis Is Reopening in The Bahamas

One of the leading luxury resorts in The Bahamas is set to reopen this week, Caribbean Journal has learned. 

The Cove at Atlantis, the 600-unit, all-suite resort at the Atlantis Paradise Island resort is reopening its doors on Feb. 11, according to the property.

The Cove has long been the most luxurious enclave at Atlantis, highlighted by its popular adults-only pool with 20 private cabanas.  

The property, set on its own stretch of beach on Paradise Island, is the latest Atlantis property to reopen amid a phased relaunch that began in mid-December and now includes The Reef, the Royal, The Coral and the Harborside resorts. 

Most of Atlantis’ popular amenities are open for travelers, including its signature casino, its marina, its spa, the Dolphin Cay marine habitat and the Ocean Club Golf Course, among others.

The Bahamas is currently open for tourism; you can find more on the country’s travel protocols here. 

The Cove joins a broad number of hotels and resorts now open in The Bahamas, from megaresorts like Atlantis and the Baha Mar to small properties across the Out Islands.

To help travelers comply with the new CDC testing requirements for returning travelers, The Cove is providing two free rapid antigen tests for per room for guests at The Cove and other Atlantis resorts.

Marriott Just Opened a New Hotel in Cancun

Marriott has opened its first new Caribbean resort of 2021, with the debut of the new Residence Inn by Marriott Cancun Hotel Zone. 

The new, all-suite property has a total of 158 suites, with separate work, living and sleeping spaces, along with fully-equipped kitchens. 

That’s along with amenities like free Wi-Fi and breakfast.

The hotel is anchored by a rooftop pool.  

“The all-suite property offers guests the ideal environment to live without constraints paired with highly personal service,” Marriott said in a statement. 

The property appeals to both leisure and longer-stay travelers, with the latter a growing trend amid the pandemic. 

“With pent-up demand predicted to lead to ‘revenge travel,’ our booking trends indicate an uptick in leisure travel planning after a difficult year,” said Tina Edmundson, Global Brand and Marketing Officer of Marriott International.

“Leisure destinations continue to be a bright spot in the progress to recovery and has become a priority growth area across all of our distinctive brands, including our popular select service hotels. These new properties will offer a chance to escape with flexible, open spaces that allow our guests to once again embrace the freedom of travel when they are ready,” Edmundson said.

The opening will soon be followed by another new launch for Marriott in the Mexican Caribbean, with the Aloft Tulum set to open in March

The latter will include 140 loft-style rooms and suites in the heart of Tulum’s downtown district. 

The Mexican Caribbean has been open for tourism since last summer, with no entry protocols.

Sandals Reopens More Resorts in Jamaica, Saint Lucia

Sandals Resorts has reopened pair of its most popular properties in the Caribbean, Caribbean Journal has learned. 

The all-inclusive company has reopened its Sandals Ocho Rios Beach Resort in Ocho Rios, Jamaica and its Sandals Halcyon Beach on the island of Saint Lucia. 

“Congrats to my incredible teams – we can’t wait to serve our customers,” said Sandals Resorts International Executive Chairman Adam Stewart.

The relaunch of Sandals Ochi means Sandals has now reopened all of its six resorts across Jamaica and all of its three resorts in Saint Lucia. 

Both properties have relaunched under Sandals’ new Platinum Protocols of Cleanliness health and safety protocols. 

For now, Sandals’ resorts in Barbados, The Bahamas and Grenada remain closed. 

The next Sandals property to relaunch will be the Sandals Emerald Bay resort in Great Exuma, which is slated to reopen on Feb. 24. 

Both Saint Lucia and Jamaica have been open for tourism since June of last year.
