St Maarten is set for a boost this summer with the addition of two new nonstop routes on Frontier Airlines, Caribbean Journal has learned. 

The low-cost carrier will kick off new nonstop routes from both Miami and Orlando to St Maarten beginning in July. 

On July 10, Frontier will start weekly Saturday service from both Orlando and Miami, Caribbean Journal confirmed.

“Frontier has risen to become one of our busiest airlines in terms of seat capacity, and we appreciate their commitment to not only maintaining Miami service throughout the pandemic but continuing to expand their route network here,” said Lester Sola, director and CEO of Miami International Airport. 

The new Miami route is part of a continued Caribbean expansion for Frontier at Miami International Airport, where the company also announced the launch of new service to Nassau. 

And it’s sign of Frontier’s growing strength in the wider Caribbean, with the low-cost carrier continuing to expand its presence in the region amid the pandemic.

“Frontier now offers 34 nonstop MIA routes this summer,” said Josh Flyr, vice president of network and operational design. “With this level of service, Miami residents now have unprecedented access to affordable flights to take them to world-class destinations.”

Orlando, too, is seeing a wave of new airlift to the Caribbean, buoyed by expansions from carriers like Frontier and Spirit Airlines, among others. 

The new flights come as St Maarten will welcome another new route this summer; in June, American Airlines will be launching new flights from Dallas-Fort Worth to St Maarten. 

St Maarten has been open for tourism since last summer.

Low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines has kicked off another new route to Puerto Rico, broadening the airline’s already-strong position. 

This weekend, Spirit officially launched new nonstop service between New York’s LaGuardia Airport and San Juan, Puerto Rico’s Luis Muñoz Marín Airport. 

“Our Guests love the convenience LaGuardia Airport provides, and we’re excited about offering even more non-stop options now that we have the opportunity to use both Terminal C and the Marine Air Terminal,” said John Kirby, Vice President of Network Planning. “We’re grateful for the Port Authority’s long-standing partnership over the past two decades, and I want to personally thank their team for supporting Spirit’s growth.”

The new nonstop route will be operating weekly on Saturdays. 

“We are delighted to assist Spirit Airlines move of all Fort Lauderdale flights to Terminal A,” said Tony Vero, General Manager of LaGuardia Airport. “While travel remains low due to the ongoing pandemic, we continue to work with Spirit, and our other airline partners to provide the highest safety measures available to keep travelers safe.”

The kick-off of LaGuardia service cements the airline’s Puerto Rico presence in the Northeast, already offering daily flights from both Newark and Boston to San Juan. 

The new launch comes as Puerto Rico continues to perform well amid the pandemic, buoyed by its position as a destination within the United States. 

Indeed, another US Caribbean destination, the United States Virgin Islands, has been one of the strongest-performing destinations in the region in 2021.

This year’s Antigua Sailing Week is turning into a virtual event. 

The physical week of sailing had been canceled this year amid the pandemic. 

This year’s virtual edition will be centered around “Sailing Week Sunday,” a virtual event with stories, interviews and entertainment live from Antigua. 

The two-hour event will be held on April 25, 2021 on the Antigua Sailing Week Facebook and YouTube accounts.  

“In the void created by the 2020 cancellation we relied on social media flashbacks to previous years to maintain visibility and our spot on the calendar,” said Event Manager Rana Lewis. “After the cancellation of 2021 we sensed the need to interact with our worldwide audience in real time while sharing the highlights of racing in Antigua & Barbuda. Essentially it is our way of extending an invitation to come as soon as is safely possible to race, chase and celebrate with us.”

This year’s edition aims to “connect and reconnect with an audience who are longtime supporters and participants of Antigua Sailing Week, their friends who have heard great things about it as well as fans of the sport and the destination – any of whom may be considering Antigua & Barbuda as an active or leisure vacation option.”

“A flagship event for Antigua and Barbuda, Antigua Sailing Week plays an important role within the yachting pillar of our tourism marketing strategy. American Airlines is expanding its capacity with widebody aircraft on several popular Caribbean routes this summer, Caribbean Journal has learned. 

This summer, American will be operating select flights from Miami to San Juan on Boeing 777-200 aircraft, according to a statement from the world’s largest airline. 

The carrier will also employ its Boeing 787-8 aircraft flights from Miami to Port-au-Prince, Haiti this summer, it said. 

American “will continue to offer more flights to more destinations in Latin America and the Caribbean than any other airline,” the company said. 

“American is using widebody aircraft to match demand from MIA,” the company said.

Fast-expanding low-cost carrier Frontier Airlines is adding another new destination in the Caribbean, Caribbean Journal has learned.

The carrier will begin operating nonstop flights from Miami to Nassau, The Bahamas starting this summer.

The new route, the carrier’s latest out of its growing Miami hub, will operate four times each week beginning June 24.

“We’re thrilled to add Nassau to our route map with nonstop Miami flights beginning this summer,” said Daniel Shurz, senior vice president of commercial at Frontier Airlines. “This world-class destination is known for its beautiful beaches, countless outdoor activities and is a great place to make unforgettable memories with family and friends this summer and we’re excited to offer Bahamians a low-fare way to Miami.”

Frontier has been steadily expanding its Caribbean operations out of Miami, having launched new service across the region in the last year.

“We are looking forward to offering high frequency options for flights to The Bahamas for our neighbors in Miami on Frontier Airlines,” said Dionsio D’Aguilar, Bahamas Minister ofTourism and Aviation. “The market is one that remains a high priority and we are excited to welcome visitors to our beautiful shores with convenient flight options this summer.”

The move adds to already-vast flight options to The Bahamas for travelers in Miami, where American Airlines already operates as may as five flights a day to Nassau alone.
