Dominican Republic Tourism Up Almost 6 Percent in 2018

By the Caribbean Journal staff

Dominican Republic tourism is up almost 6 percent so far in 2018, according to new data from the Dominican Republic’s Central Bank provided to Caribbean Journal.

The country reported a total of 2.9 million visitors in the first five months of 2018, up 5.9 percent compared to the same period in 2017, according to a statement from the Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Tourism.

The country will need to continue — and transcend — that growth rate if it is to achieve its stated goal of 10 million annual visitors by the year 2023.

Last year, the Dominican Republic grew by 3.9 percent, with a total of 6.187 million stayover tourist arrivals in the calendar year 2017.

Spirit Keeps Expanding With More Caribbean Nonstop Flights

By the Caribbean Journal staff

Low-cost carrier Spirit continues to ramp up what has been a rapid expansion to the Caribbean this summer.

The carrier has announced the addition of two major new routes: daily nonstop service from Newark Liberty International Airport to Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, along with three-times-weekly service between Detroit and Montego Bay, Jamaica.

The new Dominican Republic flights will launch Nov. 8, while the new Jamaica flights will launch operations on Dec. 20.

“We are so excited to offer both the Newark and Detroit areas low fares to some of the most wonderful countries in the world,” said Mark Kopczak, Spirit Airlines’ Vice President of Network Planning.  “Both Jamaica and the Dominican Republic are known for their hospitality and beauty and are incredible options for winter vacations or family reunions.  Spirit continues to prove itself as a go-to airline for quality affordable service to the Caribbean and Latin America.”

Santo Domingo has become one of the Caribbean’s new hotspots for adventurous travelers.

The new flights are a boost for Santo Domingo, which is seeing its already-strong airlift continue to grow; in May, JetBlue also launched the same daily Newark-Santo Domingo service.

It’s also yet another expansion for Spirit in the Caribbean following a significant announcement just last month of a wave of new nonstop flights to the Caribbean out of Orlando.

Montego Bay.

Also this year, Spirit has also added new nonstop flights from Fort Lauderdale to Cap-Haitien; launched daily nonstop flights from Fort Lauderdale to St Thomas and added daily flights from Baltimore/Washington to Montego Bay, among other new frequencies.

It’s made the carrier one of the fastest-growing airlines in the Caribbean region, putting itself in direct competition on a number of routes with both Southwest Airlines and JetBlue, both of which have significantly strengthened their Caribbean networks out of Fort Lauderdale in particular.

What’s hot in the Caribbean dining scene?

The region’s culinary footprint continues to grow, as more and more extraordinary eateries continue to pop up around the Caribbean.

But some culinary outposts have that perfect blend of quality and buzz – they’re the ones that simply demand your presence – if you can get a table, that is. They’re the hottest places to eat, the ones that aren’t just great restaurants – they’re destinations in their own right, from remarkable settings to out-of-this-world food. And they’re all over the Caribbean.

Here are the 10 hottest tables in the Caribbean to try right now (and for more, don’t miss our annual ranking of the 50 best restaurants in the Caribbean).

Graycliff, set in a nearly three-hundred-year-old former pirate’s mansion.

Graycliff, Bahamas The Caribbean’s first five-star restaurant is still one of the most sought-after tables in the region, a celebrity favorite that’s a regular destination for clientele from Jay Z to Michael Jordan. Make sure you stop in the wine cellar, the third largest private collection in the world. It all adds up to a reason on its own to travel to Nassau — and the Caribbean’s most memorable place to eat.
