Guy Harvey’s New Conservation Cruise

By the Caribbean Journal staff

The Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation and the Guy Harvey Research Institute are planning another ocean conservation-themed cruise with Norwegian Cruise Line.

NCL and renowned conservationist Guy Harvey have announced plans to partner on the second annual Conservation Cruise on Norwegian Escape, set to sail Oct. 21 out of New York.

The Caribbean cruise will feature Harvey himself leading a series of planned events about marine conservation.

“We’re honored to continue our relationship with Guy Harvey, as one of the leaders in conservation education, and to further showcase the importance of preserving the beauty and well-being of marine life for future generations to enjoy,” said Andy Stuart, president and chief executive officer of Norwegian Cruise Line. “His passion for the ocean is inspiring and extends beyond his canvases. We’re thrilled to be partnering with him and the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation once again on this special cruise on Norwegian Escape.”

The cruise will also feature a panel of marine life experts and scientists from Nova Southeastern University, along with special on-island presentations at local schools aimed at educating children on marine life and conservation.

A New $100 Million Bahamas Luxury Real Estate Project

A significant new real estate project is coming to one of the region’s hottest developments.

Nassau’s Palm Cay has unveiled its latest project, a $100 million luxury condominium and penthouse marina real estate complex.

Named One Marina, the newest addition to the growing Palm Cay residential community in New Providence has already broken the 40 percent sales mark in pre-release.

“The pre-release response was really encouraging,” said Palm Cay Director of Sales and Marketing, Myles Newell. “When we shared the design and site plan with owners and new clients prior to going to market, expression of interest was almost instant.”

The new project includes 84 two- and three-bedroom residences, with the two-bedroom units ranging from 1,780 to 1,940 square feet and the three-bedrooms ranging from 2,751 to 4,228 square feet.

Two bedrooms start at $750,000, while the three-bedroom units start at $1.5 million, according to the company.

It’s a major expansion for the community that has become one of the top marinas in the wider Caribbean and a popular home-buying destination.

The 69-acre property, set on 1,200 feet of beachfront, has a mix of townhomes, condominiums, single-family home sites and marina cottages, along with boat slips.

“Palm Cay has a strong track record with property values appreciating consistently,” Newell said. “The resort-style development has already had approximately 160 properties purchased since opening.”

It’s part of what has become a surging development in The Bahamas, from downtown Nassau’s The Pointe to Paradise Island’s new One Ocean luxury condo project.

“Palm Cay’s quality of construction, design features, size of these residences and its amenities have helped to sell out previous phases in the development in a short space of time,” Newell said. “This time around is expected to be no exception.”

At Martinique’s Hotel Bakoua, Savoring the French Caribbean

By Alexander Britell

MARTINIQUE – The glass display case at Le Gommier holds a bottle of Rhum Saint James from 1931, a sugarcane memory from a time of biguine and planteurs.

But the romance of the old French Caribbean never went anywhere — and it is not just lying on a shelf with its label peeling off. It is very much alive, here.

All of the things that placed the French West Indies in one of the most romantic corners of the minds of travelers a century ago remain, vibrant and developed, authentic and awake.

And as one sits at Le Gommier, the circular poolfront bar at the Hotel Bakoua in Martinique, it becomes obvious.

There is a peculiar rhythm and ritual here, a passion with which the barman even pours a glass of Depaz.

There is a quiet, a routine and a special kind of simplicity, an easy traveling experience.

There is the boulangerie-fresh breakfast; the mornings by the pool (perhaps with a ti’ punch); a lunch above the water at the Coco Bar, an evening with the biguine band. (And dinner with dishes like trio of foie gras, not the sort of fare you tend to find in a tourist-friendly hotel.)

The Hotel Bakoua is a traditional four-star resort on the beach in Martinique — but, more importantly, it is a classic French Caribbean hotel.

It is not grand or in your face, with no measure of opulence — it is a distilled, balanced hotel that will leave you feeling wonderfully satisfied.

It’s a place to experience the real Martinique in comfort, to begin to understand what it means to be in the French Caribbean.

But like any excellent hotel, its biggest strength is in the food and beverage department — the food is outstanding, particularly the prix-fixe dinner options, and the bars are even better: the overwater Coco Bar just past the sand and the aforementioned Gommier.

The Bakoua is set in the heart of Pointe du Bout, the “foot” of the Trois Ilets peninsula that is Martinique’s colorful tourism center.

But it’s also perched on a hillside, with an infinity pool deck that offers one of the most breathtaking views you’ll find on this side of the Caribbean — directly across from the imposing Bay of Fort de France, a sight that only becomes more spectacular by night.

There are 138 rooms and six suites, the best of which are directly on the sand, all well-appointed with amenities like Nespresso machines and fridges and marvelous views.

This is the best all-around hotel in Martinique, the best jumping off point to explore the island’s charms, the perfect way to introduce yourself to the island. If this is your first time in Martinique, you simply must stay here.  (It’s also a tremendous value).

It’s a gateway to the soul of the French Caribbean, to begin to see and understand what makes Martinique unique, what makes it different from the islands surrounding it.

Because the sounds and the smells and the sips of Martinique are utterly intoxicating — like an old bottle of Rhum Saint James.
