Rum Journal: A Triple Vintage from Martinique

By Alexander Britell

When the harvest changes, the rum changes.

It’s a tenet particular to the Rhum Agricole of the French Caribbean, the only Caribbean rum with a true terroir.

When you make your rum from freshly pressed sugar cane juice, the peculiarities of every year’s new cane mean a different result, just as rums made from different corners of Martinique and Guadeloupe have their own personalities.

What this also means is that the vintage year is of great importance for rhum agricole.

Which brings us to the our latest object of sugarcane affection, the Trois Rivieres Triple Millesime, from the venerable Sainte-Luce distillery — one that has been putting out increasingly impressive expressions in recent years.

martinique triple vintage

This is no single vintage, but a trilogy, a blend of three Gran Crus from 1998, 2006 and 2007, respectively, aged in French and American oak.

It’s another wonderful innovation by French Caribbean rummakers, a new spin on an old concept, one most recently mastered by Rhum JM with their own Triple Millesime.

So what’s it like?

This amber-hued rhum has an aroma of apricot, orange peel and spice.

The flavor profile begins with spice and then notes of heavy wood, tobacco, dried apricot and the faintest whisper of vanilla.

Then things get even more interesting, as the rum starts to become savory, with a fascinating breadfruit-style accent.

Ultimately, the rum harmonizes the sweet and the savory into a buttery, very well balanced finish.

At 42 degrees, it’s a relatively robust rum, but the trio of rums collaborates on a very interesting — and satisfying melody.

The verdict? A very fine rum indeed.

Hilton Is Expanding in Aruba

By Alexander Britell and Dana Niland

The Caribbean hotel industry is booming right now — but one global company is right at the top of the pipeline: Hilton.

The company continues to ramp up its Caribbean expansion, one that has only heated up further in 2019.

Hilton has announced plans to debut another new hotel in the Caribbean, this time an Embassy Suites by Hilton on the island of Aruba.

The new-build, 330-suite property is slated to open its doors in 2021; it would be the second Hilton-branded hotel in Aruba, along with the Hilton Aruba Caribbean Resort and Casino.

“The signing of Embassy Suites by Hilton Aruba Resort underscores Hilton’s commitment to expanding its portfolio across the Caribbean,” said Juan Corvinos, vice president, development, Caribbean and Latin America,Hilton. “We are focused on continued growth in the region and bringing our industry leading brands to top destinations like Aruba. The new Embassy Suites by Hilton resort across Eagle Beach will be a wonderful complement to our existing Hilton Aruba Caribbean Resort & Casino on Palm Beach, further extending our hospitality to a new area of the island.”

The new property, which will be set at Aruba’s famous Eagle Beach, will be located on J.E. Irausquin Boulevard.

Amenities will range from 6,000 square feet of meeting space to a spa to a casino and a pool, along with three dining concepts.

“We look forward to working alongside Hilton to introduc ethe Embassy Suites by Hilton brand to our beautiful island of Aruba,” said Fernando Fiano, a representative of Natura Development II N.V., with whom Hilton has signed a management agreement. “The resort’s location across from Eagle Beach combined with the brand’s signature amenities and spacious suites will provide travelers a comfortable upscale accommodation option in this sought after area of Eagle Beach.”

It’s been a very busy last two quarters for Hilton in the Caribbean, from its debut of new properties in the Dominican Republic and Playa del Carmen to the announcement of plans to open its first-ever hotel in the Cayman Islands

Last month, Hilton announced plans to debut its first Canopy by Hilton in the region, with the Canopy by Hilton Cancun La Isla slated to open at the end of this year.

And that’s along with a major alliance with Playa Hotels and Resorts that will see the launch of another eight all-inclusive hotels in the region by 2025.

Disney Signs Agreement for New Bahamas Cruise Destination

By the Caribbean Journal staff

Disney Cruise Line has signed a heads of agreement with the Bahamas for a proposed cruise destination in Eleuthera.

The agreement would cover a cruise port and entertainment facility at Lighthouse Point in southern Eleuthera, a project with an estimated investment of between $250 million and $400 million.

Disney has already acquired the 190-acre site; the company will be conveying the southernmost portion of the property to the Bahamian government for a national park.

The project would include “low density development and sustainable design,” according to a statement from the government.

It would also include public access for Bahamians.

The project was announced by Bahamas Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis this week.

Disney is planing an expansion of its cruise calls to The Bahamas as well , with a 30-40 percent increase in Nassau and Freeport calls this year.

“The Government of The Bahamas is satisfied that it made the best decision in the interest of the Bahamian people, a sustainable future for the people of Central and South Eleuthera and the economic development of the country,” Minnis said.

The news comes as the country’s most-visited port, Nassau, is also set for a dramatic transformation project.
