IHG’s Newest Hotel Brand Is Coming to Mexico

By the Caribbean Journal staff

Avid, the newest hotel brand by hospitality giant InterContinental Hotels Group, is coming to Mexico.

The first-ever avid [sic] in Mexico has broken ground in Fresnillo, with plans for a 95-room hotel set to debut in the spring of 2020.

“We are pleased to partner with Operadora MBA to develop the first avid hotel in Mexico. This groundbreaking further solidifies the brand’s increasing momentum and we look forward to introducing avid hotels to Mexico. We believe this brand will fill an unmet need in the market and provide great value for guests seeking high-quality hotel accommodations that cater to both business and leisure travelers.”

The project is being developed by Operadora, which said the project would fill a void for more demanding visitors to Fresnillo.

“Operadora MBA is proud to bring the first avid hotel to Mexico and to Latin America. We are confident that together with our knowledge of the local market, and the strength of the IHG brand, we will bring the best hotel experience for business and leisure travelers in Fresnillo,” said Raul Muñoz, principal of Operadora.

Avid is a value-focused brand that is “thoughtfully designed to meet guests’ expectations for the basics done exceptionally well,” according to a description by IHG.

“The response to our first open hotel properties has been very positive all around – from the guest experience to the efficiencies around build costs and operations. We are excited and expect to see similar performance and growth for this brand in Mexico,” said Jennifer Gribble, Vice President, avid hotels.

Turks and Caicos Luxury Home Lists for $15 Million

By Alexander Britell and Dana Niland

A $15 million home has hit the real estate market in Turks and Caicos, Caribbean Journal has learned.

Turks and Caicos-based Regency Christie’s International Real Estate has the listing on Point House, which is set in the private island (and celebrity favorite) enclave of Parrot Cay.

The 7,000-square-foot estate, designed by noted architect Cheong Yew Kuan, is one of just 12 private estates on Parrot Cay.

“Parrot Cay is a magical and special place that exudes the ultimate in peace and tranquility as most recently seen through the sale of the estate owned by Bruce Willis.  We are delighted to represent this exceptional property and look forward to welcoming a new family,” Robert Greenwood, Broker/Partner, Regency Christie’s International, told Caribbean Journal.

Located at the far southwest side of the island, the property lies adjacent to the nature reserve and unobstructed beach views.

Ceilings of up to 30 feet complement the Crema Luna Limestone floors and tall glass windows framed in white oak and glass doors that surround the beachfront side of the villa, allowing natural sunlight to bathe the main living area and bedrooms.

The space opens to a covered terrace and pool finished with a Lava Stone from Bali, with every facet of the villa aimed at the indoor-outdoor experience.

The beach is all yours.

On the main level are two bedrooms with private bathrooms, sunken hand-carved Crema Luna Limestone tubs and showers with complementing fully landscaped outdoor showers.

The third bedroom on the main level has a private bathroom and can be converted to a media room, office, or playroom, Christie’s said.

The upper level is where the fourth bedroom is located and offers a private bathroom and rooftop terrace.

The bedroom opens out on to the main floor with a half-shuttered balcony that allows for the islands cooling breezes to pass through without obstruction.

Nestled in the heart of the property’s easterly botanical gardens is a fifth bedroom, and is perfectly situated as a private residence or converted to a gym, art or yoga studio with a myriad of other options.

A Must-Visit Junkanoo Festival in The Bahamas

By the Caribbean Journal staff

It’s one of the icons of The Bahamas: the energy and sound of Junkanoo, The Bahamas’ famous musical mix of carnival, masquerade dance and parade.

And while you can find Junkanoo across The Bahamas during the year, Grand Bahama is right now home to one of the region’s coolest events: the Junkanoo Summer Festival.

Summer Junkanoo, a staple of The Bahamas’ summer festival circuit, is being held in Grand Bahama for the first time ever, with a schedule of Saturday festivals at Smith’s Point in Freeport.

And if you want to experience the wonder of Junkanoo, you can make it for Aug. 10 or Aug. 17.

Each festival night will feature Bahamian music, demonstrations, crafts, a special kids’ corner, live performances and an action-packed Junkanoo closing performance.
