Spirit Airlines Is Launching a Big Puerto Rico Expansion

Fast-expanding low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines is planning a major expansion in Puerto Rico, Caribbean Journal has learned.

Spirit’s expansion will be headlined by the launch of new daily nonstop flights from both Newark Liberty and Boston Logan airports to San Juan.

Both of those routes will launch operations on Dec. 19, 2019.

Spirit will also be launching an additional daily flight from Philadelphia to San Juan on March 1, 2020, according to the company.

The announcement comes as Spirit launched new nonstop flights from Baltimore, Philadelphia and Tampa to San Juan earlier this year.

“We are constantly looking for growth opportunities in our network and we are so proud of the growth we have had in Puerto Rico over the years,” said John Kirby, Spirit’s Vice President of Network Planning, in a statement. “We are very excited to continue providing our guests low fares and nonstop flights to new destinations.”

Spirit already operates daily flights from Baltimore, Orlando, Fort Lauderdale and Tampa to San Juan.

Spirit also operates daily flights from both Fort Lauderdale and Orlando to Aguadilla in the northwestern corner of Puerto Rico.

The new flights will add to a burgeoning flight network to San Juan, continuing what has been a rather dramatic airlift recovery in Puerto Rico in the last two years since Hurricane Maria.

Indeed, the most recent numbers from ASUR, which operates San Juan’s Luis Munoz Marin International Airport, showed an 8.4 percent increase in passenger traffic in the first three quarters of 2019, compared to the same period in the previous year.

Spirit is one of several low-cost carriers that have been significantly ramping up their Caribbean operations, along with airlines like Sun Country and Southwest Airlines.

Spirit has been serving Puerto Rico for nearly 20 years.

How to Fly to Dominica’s Hot New Hotel

The most anticipated hotel opening of 2019 is being accompanied by the launch of its own airline.

The soon-to-open Cabrits Resort and Spa Kempinski Dominica has announced that it will be launching its own air service to the island, a gorgeous but somewhat difficult-to-reach destination in the Eastern Caribbean.

The new 151-room luxury resort will be offering the option of exclusive flights for guests traveling through hubs in nearby Antigua or Guadeloupe.

The property will be operating the service on one of Tropical Aviation’s 10-seat Beechcraft King Air 200.

The short flight will be accompanied by private SUV transfer from Dominica’s airport.

The resort, just the second Kempinski property in the Caribbean, will open next week.

There’s no cooler pool anywhere in Barbados than this dramatically positioned overwater pool in the heart of the marina.

Port Ferdinand This just might be the best-kept secret in Barbados right now. The spectacularly designed Port Ferdinand is Barbados’ premier residential resort, meaning it combines the ease and comfort of residential properties with the luxury and amenities of a full-service resort. Set just outside Speightstown in the wonderful northwestern corridor of the island, Port Ferdinand features a collection of 46 opulently appointed units, some with private plunge pools, all set around a gorgeous marina setting. It’s just across the road from a privileged perch of beach, and while the dining, both in the overwater pool and the Dockside eatery, is terrific, Port Ferdinand has a party piece: it’s home to the only Nikki Beach in the English-speaking Caribbean. It’s the new luxury epicentre of the island.
