A Legendary Caribbean Resort Reborn in St Barth

St Barth’s most iconic resort is making its long-awaited comeback this month.

The Oetker Collection’s Eden Rock St Barths is set for its official reopening on Nov. 20, according to the company.

The resort, set on the spectacular St Jean beach in St Barth, first opened its doors in the 1950s as one of the first true jet-set getaways.

For years, it’s been the island’s signature place to stay, welcoming everyone from Greta Garbo and Gore Vidal to the Rockefellers and the Rothschilds.

While many of the resort’s popular villas have been open in the last two years, the resort itself has been shuttered since Hurricane Irma in 2017, having undertaken a large-scale reconstruction effort.

“We are so looking forwards to greeting again our dear Guest-friends and have dozens of great surprises for them,” said Fabrice Moizan, general manager of the Eden Rock St Barths. “The rebuilt Eden Rock – St Barths will be stronger and better able to recover from any storm… whilst at the same time preserving its precious heritage commenced by Rémy de Haenen in 1953 and channeling the same unique one-of-a-kind atmosphere all as before.”

All of the rooms, villas and “houses” at the property have undergone a complete redesign and “replenishment,” according to the resort.

“Our family has chosen the option to remake or restore pretty much everything in all parts of Eden Rock – St Barths,” said owner Jane Matthews. “We continue to fix our sights on being world class and remaining there. In this ambition, we are so thankful to belong on this fantastic island. There is nowhere like it in the world.”

The hotel has also added three new rooms with sea views called Tristan, Arthur and Theodore, along with three new suites on the resort’s legendary “Rock.”

The Eden Rock has also remodeled its “superprime” villas, with six suites in Villa Rockstar and three suites in the new Villa Nina.

The property also said it would continue its decades-long commitment to art, continuing a long commitment with the New York Academy of Art’s Graduate School of Art.

The brand-new Eden Spa will be set at the top of the Rock, with a new “yacht-on-land” themed sitting area and three cabins, with a menu of St Barth’s own Ligne St Barth.

Superstar Chef Jean-Georges will continue to lead the culinary program, with a new Sand Bar restaurant, a new “Remy Bar,” named after the first owner of the property, and a new ER Beach Bar for those famous Eden Rock lunches.

It’s a huge comeback for what remains the Caribbean’s true capital of luxury.

Bermuda Set for New PGA Tour Event

The island of Bermuda has long been one of the wider region’s greatest golf destinations.

But for all of its golfing heritage and acclaim, it’s never held an annual PGA Tour event — until now.

This week will see the first-ever Bermuda Championship, a full-fledged PGA Tour event at Bermuda’s Port Rouyal Golf Club from Oct. 31-Nov. 3.

The field will include a mix of longtime PGA veteran names like Fred Funk and up-and-comers like Lanto Griffin, who took home his first-ever PGA Tour victory at the Houston Open earlier this month.

Port Royal, which was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr in 1970, recently underwent a nearly $14.5 million renovation.

The tournament the latest in what has become a burgeoning sports tourism industry in Bermuda, as tourism officials look to diversify the destination into a true year-round getaway.

That was most notable with the 2017 hosting of the America’s Cup yachting race.

From St Barth to Punta Cana, 5 Caribbean Places to Visit in November

November is one of our favorite times of year to travel to the Caribbean. The weather is glorious, the crowds are less and the deals are plenty. But it’s also close enough to peak season that you’ll still get much of the same energy and activity as you will during high season.

The latest edition of Places to Visit takes you across the Caribbean from the tony enclave of St Barth to the booming tourism hub of Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic.

The Caribbean Rum Awards will be hosted at the Rhum Room, the greatest rum bar in the Caribbean.

St Barth November is a sublime time to travel to this French Caribbean gem; the must-visit eateries and boutiques are open, but there’s an extra degree of calm and serenity — not to mention more available rooms and villas (the latter being one of the most wonderful ways to stay on the island). But this is a particularly exciting November in St Barth, thanks to the debut on island of CJ’s Caribbean Rum Awards, starting Nov. 6. The four-day event is the region’s leading celebration of Caribbean rum, with a focus on ultra-premium expressions and on the diverse world of rhum agricole. Even better? The event is timed perfectly with the St Barth Gourmet Festival, the gastronomic dinner series that’s chock full of Michelin-starred culinary adventures.

The BVI The Caribbean’s coolest culinary festival is a great reason to plan your trip to the BVI this month, with the month-long BVI Food Fete. The series of events is, uniquely, held across a number of different islands and cays, making it a full-fledged island-hopping food festival. And even if you’re on a diet, the BVI is back and better than ever, from private-island getaways like Cooper Island and Guana to the resurgent scene in Tortola.

Guadeloupe While it still remains an under-the-radar destination, Guadeloupe is set for a big lift next year with the launch of its first-ever JetBlue flights from New York. But for those in the know, Guadeloupe is one of the more fascinating, sophisticated and romantic places to visit in the Caribbean, and it just got a whole lot more interesting this week with the debut of its first-ever five-star resort, the transformed La Toubana in Sainte Anne.

Bonaire Travelers are increasingly falling in love with this action-packed jewel of the Dutch Caribbean. It’s got a remarkable adventure offering, from some of the Caribbean’s best diving to windsurfing, snorkeling and even more exotic sports like landsailing — married with a quietly booming food scene and a diverse selection of hotels that remains arguably the best-value hotel product in the Caribbean.

Punta Cana What was already the most popular hotel investment destination in the Caribbean is getting even hotter this year, with the imminent launch of Hyatt’s highly-anticipated new all-inclusive properties in Punta Cana’s chic corner of Cap Cana later this week. They’re a breath of fresh air for the destination and a reminder that the Dominican Republic is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to the beach resort experience.
