Delta Launches New Daily Flights to Puerto Rico

Delta Air Lines has kicked off its newest daily flights to Puerto Rico, launching daily service from Detroit to San Juan.

The new service will be operating daily from now through April 7, 2020, according to the Puerto Rico Tourism Company.

The route represents an increase of 19,620 seats to Puerto Rico, along with an estimated economic impact of $9.1 million, according to Carla Campos, executive director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company.

In April, the service will continue with weekly flights between Detroit and San Juan on Saturdays.

“We welcome Detroit as a destination, with the help of our business partners, Delta. Detroit is a great opportunity for us because it opens the doors to a new visitor market, ”said Jorge Hernández, CEO of Aerostar, which manages San Juan’s Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport.

Delta already operates service to San Juan from Atlanta, New York and Minneapolis.

It has been operating flights to Puerto Rico for 66 years — Delta’s longest uninterrupted service to any Caribbean destination.

New Flights Coming Between Punta Cana, Tortola

Turks and Caicos-based interCaribbean Airways has confirmed its plans to launch a new gateway between Punta Cana and Tortola in the British Virgin Islands.

The new service is set to begin in January, with flights operated on the carrier’s Embraer 120 aircraft.

The new route will create a significant new air route for travelers to the British Virgin Islands, thanks to the high volume of flights that already serve Punta Cana International Airport.

“With a USA Preclear facility set to come online, a journey from Tortola via Punta Cana to numerous other cities in the USA, makes this the most convenient gateway to return back into the USA as a domestic arrival experience,” the carrier said in a statement.

Air travelers to the BVI typically fly through San Juan or St Thomas at present.

The new flights will be operating twice weekly, with service on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

“The British Virgin Islands Tourist Board is very pleased with the addition of Punta Cana to interCaribbean’ BVI schedule,” the organization said in a statement. “We have been advocating and assiduously pushing for the addition of this flight for several years, given the substantial global air capacity into Punta Cana and the opportunity to develop this as another alternate route for getting to the BVI. We have great hope for the new opportunities that this brings to BVI as we open more gateways to our island.”

Rum Journal: A Big Statement from Rhum Bologne

It’s one of the French Caribbean’s signature brands, and arguably the most popular ingredient in the classic ti ‘punch: Rhum Bologne, Guadeloupe’s rum powerhouse.

But for years, Bologne was just that: part of a ti’ punch, an outstanding cocktail.

In recent years, though, Bologne has quietly developed its aged portfolio — and its most recent output has reached a new level — as it has simultaneously put out a remarkable array of smaller-batch white rhums like Black Cane and, most notably, the celebrated La Coulisse (which took home Double Gold at the 2019 Caribbean Rum Awards in St Barth.)

We were lucky enough to find a good selection of Bologne expressions on a recent jaunt to Saint Martin, and the results continued to impress.

Our favorite? The new Bologne Grand Reserve.

The Bologne GR is a blend of rhums aged between six and eight years in French oak, bottled in an elegant package.

So what’s it like?

The Grande Reserve has an aroma of mango, dried figs and apricot.

Its flavor profile is marked by notes of black pepper, orange peel, fennel and a hint of candied mango.

It’s a wonderfully balanced rum with a harmonious, exquisite finish, one that lingers on delightfully, like a sugarcane ember on your palate.

Bologne’s aged rums have come a very long way in just a few years – and the Grande Reserve is a stunner.

This is a really good rum. Period.
