The landscape on the Great Abaco Highway is raw and simple, one long road straddled by nature. 

And as you make the straight-line drive from Marsh Harbour to South Abaco, the trees and the brush begin to get taller, greener. 

And you can see how a few miles can mean everything, as leaves and trunks seem to reappear as if pages in a flipbook. 

It’s just a few dozen miles to the south, but that can be all the difference — a quirk of fate that left South Abaco largely spared from the wrath of Dorian.

New York’s Dream Hotel Group is planning a new hotel on the Caribbean coast of Mexico. 

The company has announced plans to open “Emma & Elissa by Dream Hotel Group” in 2023 in the fast-expanding beach town of Playa del Carmen. 

The new hotel, the product of a partnership with Grupo Proactivo and Foro Construcciones, is part of a growing Caribbean pipeline for Dream Hotel Group, which includes several hotels in the region under development under the Dream and Unscripted brands. 

The 220-room hotel will have a rooftop infinity pool, a bar, a second pool, an eatery, a beach cafe and a kids club, among other features. 

It’s being designed by Mexican architect Rodrigo de la Peña.

“Grupo Proactivo and Aldea Oceana Holdings are top players in Mexico and the perfect partners to bring our vision of hospitality to life in the beautiful coastal resort town of Playa del Carmen,” said Dream Hotel Group CEO Jay Stein. “It’s an honor to collaborate with likeminded innovators like José Mireles Verastegui who share our passion for creating new, fresh and authentic hotels, and we look forward to introducing a new luxury lifestyle experience to hotel guests and local residents alike in 2023.”

Dream also has a planned project in Belize and Tulum. 

“We are thrilled to introduce the By Dream Hotel Group brand of hospitality to Playa del Carmen,” said José Mireles Verastegui, CEO of Grupo Proactivo. “We have a great synergy working together and look forward to developing another incredible project in one of the world’s most desirable beachfront destinations.”

The project is the latest in an increasing number of hotels on the way in Playa del Carmen. Just last week, Marriott announced that it would be opening a new W-branded hotel in the town.

Cancun, one of the Caribbean’s hottest hotel markets, is now home to another new property, this time the first-ever Canopy by Hilton in Mexico. 

Hilton’s new lifestyle brand, Canopy by Hilton, opened the new Canopy by Hilton Cancun La Isla on Tuesday, set in the heart of Cancun’s Hotel Zone. 

The 174-room hotel, which Hilton is billing as an “urban oasis,” also represents the first Canopy-branded property in the wider Caribbean region. 

“Cancun is one of Mexico’s most visited destinations, offering an array of attractions to entice every traveler,” said Jorge Giannattasio, senior vice president and head of operations, Caribbean and Latin America. “It is the perfect place to introduce the Canopy by Hilton lifestyle brand in the Caribbean and Latin America, as we continue to expand our portfolio across the region.”

Giannattasio said the hotel was developed to be “thoughtfully local,” with a focus on one of the travel industry’s hottest buzz words: “experiences.”

And the “local” focus extends property wide, with murals by local artists across the hotel and a signature restaurant meant to remind of a local market in Mexico. 

The centerpiece of the hotel is a 9,500-square-foot roof deck called Wander, which includes 9,500 square feet of space, a pool, a soaking pool and a series of rotating art exhibitions and live music sets — the latter a big part of the hotel’s focus on events and activities.

There’s also the aforementioned local-market-style Azulinda Cafe and Bar along with a lobby “gathering area” called Canopy Central. 

“We are thrilled to introduce the brand’s groundbreaking hospitality concept to the region, as Canopy by Hilton and Hilton continue to showcase their commitment to creating positive travel experiences,” said Gary Steffen, global head, Canopy by Hilton. “True to the Canopy by Hilton brand, Cancun’s colorful culture is reflected in the property’s architecture, design, culinary experiences and programming to create memorable moments for well-traveled vacationers.”

Hilton has clearly made the Caribbean an area of focus for its global development plans, and the new Canopy is part of a wider pipeline that also includes the recently-debuted Koi Resort (a Curio-branded hotel) in St Kitts, its first entry to Anguilla with its LXR brand at the Zemi Beach House and a new planned hotel in the Cayman Islands, among others. (That’s without mentioning Hilton’s new foray into the increasingly competitive all-inclusive space).
