Canadian carrier WestJet has returned to Cancun on the Caribbean coast of Mexico.
WestJet officially resumed its flights from Toronto to Cancun on Saturday; the flights will be running once weekly on Saturdays.
WestJet is operating the flights on Boeing was 737-800 aircraft.
“Governments and Canadians from coast-to-coast are working together to lessen the impact of this pandemic and we are grateful that these efforts have put us in a position to add more options for travel this July,” said Arved von zur Muehlen, WestJet Chief Commercial Officer.
Cancun is the first destination in the broader Caribbean region to see a return by WestJet since the beginning of the pandemic.
Another major Caribbean resort has reopened as the region’s tourism sector continues its relaunch: the Ritz-Carlton, Aruba, which began welcoming guests again this week.
The Ritz-Carlton, Aruba joins two other Ritz-Carlton resorts in the Caribbean that have reopened, along with the Ritz-Carlton, St Thomas and Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Puerto Rico (Puerto Rico is officially reopening for tourism next week).
“The Ladies and Gentlemen of The Ritz-Carlton, Aruba are honored to welcome our valued guests back to our wonderful island,” Steven Redkoles, Area General Manager at The Ritz-Carlton, Aruba, told Caribbean Journal. “An inspiring journey awaits our guests and we are committed to serve them in a safe and comfortable environment where they can discover reimagined luxury.”
The Palm Beach-area property has made some changes, including newly-recrafted menus, the addition of carry-out options at restaurants, and a reopened casino that is now the “premier non-smoking casino in Aruba”
The property has a total of 320 guest rooms and suites, the aforementioned 24-hour casino, a club lounge and a spa with 13 treatment rooms and six eateries.
Those eateries include the signature BLT Steak, and Casa Nonna, the first Aruba outpost of the renowned New York Italian restaurant.
The resort has relaunched under parent company Marriott’s “Commitment to Clean,” a comprehensive series of measures that impact every facet of the guest experience, from social distancing in public spaces to the use of new cleaning technologies.

Their parents nor caregivers did not apply for the twins’ citizenship
Once they get out of prison for separate sentences of “grievous bodily harm,” London-born twins Darrell and Darren Roberts could end up getting deported to two Caribbean countries that they have never previously visited.
In a BBC report, the 24-year-old twins had been issued with deportation notifications, and once their have served their jail time, they will be flown straight to Dominica and Grenada, the countries where their parents were citizens.
This is according to the siblings of the twins. The Home Office denied this information.
“The Home Office considers carefully all cases where an offender is suspected of being potentially liable for deportation and it has a particular responsibility where the offending is prolific or high harm,” a spokesman said. “Neither Darrell or Darren Roberts are currently detained under immigration powers nor are they subject to deportation orders.”
The Home Office automatically issues a deportation notice to non-citizens convicted of a reasonably serious offence with a sentence of more than 12 months.
But the BBC has seen a notice sent to one of the men that indicates the Home Office does intend to pursue deportation.
Neither parents obtained a UK citizenship. As per UK law, children born in the country to foreign parents can be eligible for British citizenship but cannot be automatically citizens.
Meanwhile, Darrell’s lawyer said his client was British and had served his six-year prison sentence for grievous bodily harm at the age of 17.
Darrell’s lawyer believes sending the his client to Dominica was an error because his father was born on the island of Dominica.
His twin Darren, meanwhile, will be deported to Grenada (his mother’s birthplace) after he has finished his own sentence for grievous bodily harm.
Ealing Council’s social services took cake of the twins when they were 13, following the death of their mother and their father returning to Dominica.
Regional Caribbean air carrier Winair has relaunched its service between St Maarten and Antigua.
The St Maarten-based carrier is operating the service twice daily, five days per week, according to a statement.
It’s the latest relaunched route for the company, which has also resumed service to Curacao, Aruba and St Barth out of the airline’s hub at St Maarten’s Princess Juliana International Airport.
St Maarten’s airport officially resumed operations on July 1.
