Bermuda elections update

Bermuda Health Ministry assures Bermudians that they will be able to vote in the upcoming elections on October 1st amid the prevalence of COVID-19.

In a media briefing, Health Minister Kim Wilson Wilson said that there were recent amendments to the Parliamentary Election Act. The amendments include the right for prisoners on parole to vote and allowing high-risk Bermudians like the senior citizens and the medically vulnerable to cast their vote early or from their homes.

“There has been a lot of concern raised about accessibility to voting. I am here today to speak about the measures the Government has taken to make voting safer and more accessible than ever before.”

Wilson also noted that the Government will be following the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) guidelines to ensure there are no cases for transmission.

Moreover, people in quarantine will also be able to vote by following the guidelines released by the Parliamentary Registry.

It was earlier announced that come election day, voters will have to wear a mask to enter the polling station, must have their temperatures checked and also sanitise their hands.

One Bermuda Alliance’s returning candidates

Susan Jackson and Scott Pearman will be contesting for the parliamentary seats under the One Bermuda Alliance (OBA).

Jackson will compete in Constituency 20 (Pembroke South West) while Pearman will contest for Constituency 22 (Paget East).

“It’s going to take a lot of strength for us to recover from the effects of COVID-19. It’s important that we get this right,” Jackson stated.

Pearman meanwhile noted the island is heavily indebted and it will soon affect the quality of life for all citizens.

Progressive Labour Party’s new representatives

On the other hand, the ruling Progressive Labour Party (PLP) presented two new candidates.

Premier David Burt announced Senator Ianthia Simmons-Wade will run in Constituency 25 (Warwick North East) and Jache Adams in Constituency 19 (Pembroke West).

Simmons-Wade, who said will continue to champion the concerns of the elderly, will replace Minister of Finance Curtis Dickinson.

Dickinson is transferred to Constituency 21 (Pembroke South East) to replace veteran politician Rolfe Commissiong.

Adams will go head to head with the One Bermuda Alliance’s Marcus Jones.

Sandals Set to Relaunch South Coast Resort in Jamaica

Sandals is set for a major relaunch of its Sandals South Coast resort in Jamaica, centered around a new kind of swim-up room in the Caribbean.

The all-inclusive Sandals South Coast is close to completing a multimillion-dollar renovation, slated to debut this December.

The centerpiece of the transformation project is the addition of the brand’s first-ever Swim-up Rondoval Suites, units that will combine their own private plunge pools with zero-entry, swim-up access to a winding river-style pool that Sandals says will be the “longest pool in the Western Hemisphere.”

The resort is also completely reimagining its 112-room Dutch Village, which will have direct access to two new swim-up pools.

Sandals also said it would be adding a “modern, lush wedding venue” to the property’s Italian Village wing.

Sandals’ Rondoval suites first debuted at the company’s Sandals Grande Antigua resort, followed by similar launches in Grenada and Barbados.

Each of the 20 Rondoval swim-up suites will measure 22 feet in diameter, with 20-foot conical ceilings.

Each suite will have its own private plunge pool along with swim-up access to the pool oasis, along with amenities like a “tranquility soaking tub” and butler service, among others.

“Sandals South Coast is one of the most beautiful destinations in the uncharted land of Jamaica,” said Gordon “Butch” Stewart, chairman of Sandals Resorts. “Our goal is to exceed expectations time and time again, and the new Sandals South Coast will do that and more. The resort which is nestled within a lush 500-acre nature preserve, along crystal blue waters was our inspiration for this incredibly expansive project. We can’t wait for our guests to experience these new, luxurious innovations.”

It’s the latest upgrade to the property in recent years, following earlier projects that added over-the-water bungalows and an overwater wedding chapel.

And it’s a big boost for a property long considered the most “serene” resort in the entire Sandals portfolio.

Carriacou Agricultural division boasts increased crop production

Grenada GIS – Despite the global slowdown in various sectors due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Agricultural Division in the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs & Local Government is boasting increased crop production at the government-operated farms and Carriacou on a whole, for the year 2020.

More than 15 acres of land has been cultivated at the 3 government-operated farms, on the island: The Belair Plant Nursery, Dumfries Propagation Centre, and the Limlair Livestock Station.

Senior Agricultural Officer in the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs & Local Government, Benson Patrice, said that upon government’s call to the nation, amidst COVID-19, to place more emphasis on backyard gardening as a means of food security, the Agricultural Division, being the lead agency on the island, saw it fitting to lead by example.

Consequently, there is now a high level of production at all government-operated farms on the island.

For the year thus far, more than 12,000 vegetable seedlings have been produced in a wide variety and sold to farmers, while more than 170 gardens on the island received government’s plough service.

Patrice added that the data is already record-breaking in comparison to past years and speaks volumes to the strength of the agricultural sector in Carriacou.

Despite being unable to render the plough service of the Agricultural Division in Petite Martinique this year, the island made use of a small rototiller and is also producing successful crops. Patrice announced that this will soon be something of the past, as the division has secured a new plough tractor for the island from a generous contribution made by the People’s Republic of China.

He also noted that, as a means of promoting and encouraging youth to get involved in the sector, the Agricultural Division continues to run its 4H Programme throughout most schools on the island focusing on practical agriculture and life skills, as well as providing incentive support under its Food Security Initiative Programme.
