Spirit Relaunches Flights to Cap-Haitien, Haiti

Spirit Airlines has relaunched its flights from Fort Lauderdale to Cap-Haitien on the northern coast of Haiti.

The low-cost carrier resumed the service between Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Cap-Haitien International Airport on Dec. 3.

The service is the only nonstop route between the United States and the northern part of Haiti.

Spirit is operating thrice weekly service, with flights on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.

Spirit has been operating flights to Haiti since launching in Port-au-Prince in 2007.

It first launched flights to Cap-Haitien in 2018.

This Renowned Caribbean Hotel Just Reopened

You can travel all over the Caribbean and struggle to find a more beautiful beach than Little Dix Bay in Virgin Gorda.

It’s really that good.

Conveniently, there’s also a hotel there — and the luxury property that calls it home has completed its comeback.

Rosewood Little Dix Bay, the most renowned hotel in the British Virgin Islands, officially reopened its doors on Dec. 4, Caribbean Journal has confirmed.

The historic property in the British Virgin Islands began welcoming guests once again on Friday.

The luxury retreat had just completed a nearly four-year-long transformation project at the beginning of 2020 before shuttering amid the pandemic.

New York’s Meyer Davis led what had been a complete remake of the property, and the creation of 80 brand-new rooms, suites and villas.

The result is what remains the most luxurious resort in all of the British Virgin Islands.

A bedroom inside one of the property’s Treehouse Suites.

The 500-acre property, which was originally designed by Laurance Rockefeller and first opened in 1964, has long been one of the region’s top eco-luxe retreats; it joined the Rosewood portfolio in 1993.

It’s one of just four Rosewood properties in the wider Caribbean, joining the Rosewood Baha Mar in Nassau; Rosewood Mayakoba in the Mexican Caribbean and the Rosewood Le Guanahani St Barth, which will officially open in 2021.

The British Virgin Islands reopened its borders for tourism on Dec. 1, with a set of regulations covering both visitor entry and rigorous monitoring on the ground.

Eastern Airlines Is Launching Flights to the Dominican Republic

The revived Eastern Airlines is back in the Caribbean.

The new iteration of the once-legendary carrier is set to launch expanded Caribbean flights in December with service to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Eastern Airlines will be launching twice-weekly flights from both Boston and Miami to Santo Domingo.

On Dec. 17, Eastern will be operating flights from Santo Domingo to Boston on Thursdays and Saturdays and from Boston to Santo Domingo on Mondays and Saturdays.

On Dec. 21, Eastern will launch Santo Domingo-Miami flights on Mondays and Tuesdays, with Miami-Santo Domingo service on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Eastern will also be launching flights from Santo Domingo to Philadelphia on Tuesdays and Fridays, with service kicking off on Dec. 15.

This summer, Eastern Airlines kicked off its Caribbean service with seasonal flights between New York and Port-au-Prince, Haiti that are not currently operating.

The “new” Eastern relaunched with the original Eastern Air Lines’ intellectual property, trademarks and logos (and even the carrier’s original callsign) in January 2020.

The company is a completely different one from the Miami-based carrier that was a dominant player in the hemisphere for almost seven decades until ceasing operations in 1991.

In 2011, another company looked to revive the Eastern brand before launching charter service to the Caribbean and eventually folding; eventually, the brand and intellectual property were pouched by a new company in 2018.

For now, the carrier’s focus is connecting North and South America (and the Caribbean), with the Dominican Republic joining destinations like Ecuador, Brazil and Guyana, among others.

Even amid the current realities of travel, Santo Domingo continues to see strong interest from a number of carriers, from American Airlines to United.
