Celebrity Edge Makes Its First Trip to the Caribbean

By the Caribbean Journal staff

The highly-anticipated Celebrity Edge cruise ship has launched its first-ever cruise to the Caribbean.

Celebrity Cruises’ new state-of-the-art ship made its first-ever Caribbean call this week with a stop in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico.

“We are grateful to the cruise line for continuing to bet on Puerto Rico as an important port for its Caribbean operations,” said Carla Campos, executive director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company.

Celebrity Edge has 10 scheduled visits to Puerto Rico over the coming peak cruise season, according to Campos.

That means a projected injection of $2.675 million into the local economy.

“Edge’s presence in San Juan is a testimony to the growth and support that the cruise industry is experiencing on the island,” said Anthony Maceira, executive director of the Ports Authority. “It’s turning us into one of the leading ports in all of the Caribbean region.”

Tradewind Aviation resumed service from San Juan to both Anguilla and Nevis last week.

The operator put a hold on service to Anguilla after Hurricanes Irma and Maria, and is now returning after one year out of the market as the island makes its tourism recovery.

The Nevis service operated last season up to April 2018.

Tradewind also announced it will send even more aircrafts down to the Caribbean this season, citing high demand, particularly to St Barth.

The operator will fly 10 aircraft to the French Caribbean island— 40 percent more than last year and 20 percent more than pre-hurricane levels, Tradewind’s David Zipkin told Caribbean Journal.

“The demand, especially for St Barth, is at unprecedented levels, so we are moving quickly to meet the need,” Zipkin said.

Tradewind has a fleet of 21 Pilatus aircraft.

The tourism industry in St. Kitts and Nevis is moving with “leaps and bounds,” according to Minister of Tourism, Lindsay Grant.

During a public address last week, Grant highlighted that 2018 has been a landmark year for the federation.

“We had the opening of the Park Hyatt, the attainment of St. Kitts being a marque port; we welcomed our 1 millionth passenger in July 2018; we have expanded our tourism education program and our strategy of imparting, that, in terms of our human capacity and capital, is well on our way,” he said.

The federation is expecting another “landmark” year in 2019, as a number of capital projects will continue to enhance the tourism product.

According to Prime Minister Timothy Harris, $5,9 million has been allotted for capital expenditure.

“Capital projects to be implemented by the Ministry of Tourism include: the Black Rocks Enhancement Project, the Coastal Erosion Mitigation Project, the South Friars Bay Beach Enhancement Project, the Tourism Development Project, and the Support for ECO Park Project,” said Harris. “In addition to these projects, work on the second phase of the De Strip Development Project will begin.”
