Ultra-luxe cruise line Regent Seven Seas has floated out the company’s newest ship.

Regent Seven Seas and shipbuilder Fincantieri debuted the new Seven Seas Splendor on the sea for the first time this week.

The ship is currently putting the finishing touches on its 375 suites, eateries and lounges.

The fifth ship in the company’s fleet will make its inaugural sailing in February 2020.

“One year from now, guests will begin immersing themselves in elegance and hospitality, while fully discovering the hundreds of destinations around the world Seven Seas Splendor travels, returning home at day’s end to the exquisite comfort and care on board with every luxury included,” said Jason Montague, president and chief executive officer of Regent Seven Seas Cruises. “I’m excited for our guests to experience how Seven Seas Splendor will perfect luxury.”

Regent said the 55,000—gross-ton, 750-guest ship will have one of the highest space ratios and staff-to-guest ratios in the industry.

The new ship will include the Regent Suite, the largest suite of its kind, with more than 3,000 square feet of interior space and another 1,300 square feet on its wraparound veranda.

On The Bahamas’ Andros Island, The Art of Real Adventure

By Guy Britton

WEST SIDE NATIONAL PARK — Andros is different.

Most islands are surrounded by water.

Andros merges with water.

Water passes through and around and beneath this island, the largest in The Bahamas (and sixth-largest island in the Caribbean) and just about a short flight from Nassau.

That includes blue holes — there are 178 of them on the island and 50 in the water around the island.

And then there are the creeks, estuaries and vast mangrove flats, an uncanny pastiche of sea water and fresh water.

On Andros’ east side, the ocean plunges to 6,000 feet just a mile offshore.

The west entrance to Middle Bight.

Andros has The Bahamas’ only freshwater river, exporting 19-million liters of fresh water a day though Nassau.

The topography, the scenery, the natural world here are without parallel — it’s different, and it’s an adventure.

At the heart of it is the legendary Small Hope Bay Lodge, a hub for experiencing the adventure of Andros.

Small Hope Bay Lodge.

In addition to world class diving and fishing there are blue hole tours, nature trails, kayaking trails, biking and numerous hikes and adventures.

The latter included a “water sportsman ultimate adventure trip” to take a guided flats boat from the east through the island to the wild western side of Andros.

And the west coast is where things really get interesting.

They call it the “West Side Story” and there is more to the story than meets the eye. This is a serious all day journey. Read the fine print.

Andros’ rugged West Coast is a labyrinth of mangrove flats, creeks, islands and passages.

bahamas andros adventure

There are many passages that go deep into the island but in the middle of the island you can pass right through from the east to the west side.

It is about 30 miles depending upon the creeks and passageways you take through the island. These passageways are called “bights.’

Middle bight is where we started our journey, departing the boat launch at Cargill Creek on the south east corner of North Andros.

The landscape here is dynamic, constantly changing from rugged interior water to white sandy beaches and everything in between.

From there it’s 35 miles though the bight to the western shore.

The fly fishing here is world class, but it’s a long way to go to get to the west side and there is a lot to see and do along the way.

So we used shrimp and spinning reels and had five snappers in the boat within 10 minutes.

With a deserted island in our sites and a fire to grill up the freshly caught snapper, life got way better in a hurry.

bahamas andros adventure

We spent eight hours on the water, and did not see another boat all day long.

It’s an experience that can be equal parts exhilarating and unnerving; you’re out there on the Bahamian frontier, without cell service, from 30 to 40 miles away from the next living soul.

But that’s what makes this corner of the island such a dramatic, thrilling adventure — you’re truly on the edge, truly away from it all, rediscovering what adventure really means.

Here, where the water and the land merge and fuse and become one and then something else entirely, things are different.

But until you get here, you don’t realize how different – and magical – it really is.

Hilton Advances Caribbean Hotel Expansion in Cancun

By the Caribbean Journal staff

Hilton has big plans in the Mexican Caribbean, and now the travel giant is adding yet another hotel in the region.

Hilton has announced plans to open the Caribbean’s first Canopy by Hilton hotel, with the Canopy by Hilton Cancun La Isla slated to make its debut in late 2019.

It’s the first Canopy in Mexico and the second in Latin America, with a focus on what the company said would be “local design, art, food, drink and social areas.”

The hotel will be located in the largest shopping center in Cancun, the Isla Mall, with a total of 175 guest rooms adjacent to La Isla’s Fashion Harbour luxury wing.

The new opening is part of a wider Mexico expansion Hilton announced on Tuesday that includes a new Hilton-branded hotel in Monterrey and two Curio Collection by Hilton properties in Mexico City.

“With Mexico a constant priority in our regional expansion plans, we have gravitated toward Monterrey and Cancun as the cities represent two of the most active markets in the country,” said Juan Corvinos, vice president, development, Caribbean and Latin America at Hilton. “The demands and preferences of today’s travelers continue to evolve, and we are creating a new guest experience by introducing new brands and properties for business and leisure travelers alike.”

The new Cancun hotel is part of a wider Caribbean push by Hilton, one that accompanies a high-profile strategic alliance with Playa Hotels and Resorts, one that saw the debut in 2018 of the Hilton Playa del Carmen.

It should be noted that the new Canopy-branded hotel will not be an all-inclusive, however, and is unrelated to the Playa alliance.

Hilton has a total of 60 hotels in Mexico.
