JetBlue Is Launching a Big Expansion to Cancun

No destination in the wider Caribbean is seeing more interest from airlines right now than Cancun.

Since the Mexican Caribbean’s tourism reopening in the early summer, Cancun International Airport continues to draw new routes from a host of carriers — and now JetBlue is launching an expansion of its own.

In March, JetBlue will be launching four new routes to Cancun, with new service from Austin, Nashville, Los Vegas and Sacramento.

All of the routes will be operating three times each week, according to JetBlue.

“This year has pushed us to find new ways of operating our business and we’ve adapted at a pace we’ve never seen before, pivoting our network in response to changing customer demand,” said Scott Laurence, head of revenue and planning, JetBlue. “We’re continuing to play offense to bring in cash revenue and support our business recovery. These network additions help fine-tune our geography in ways that make sense in today’s market.”

The JetBlue announcement comes as more carriers look to capitalize on Cancun’s strong travel demand amid the pandemic, from Frontier’s just-announced route from Miami to Cancun to United’s broad expansion to Cancun from cities like Newark, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

It’s not a surprise given Cancun’s broad tourism reopening, one that kicked off in June and remains arguably the most complete travel relaunch in the wider region.

Indeed, last month Cancun International Airport reported passenger traffic of 1.663 million last month.

While that was just 39 percent of the same period in 2019, it was more passengers than any other airport in the wider Caribbean.

St Barth’s Le Sereno Is Open Again

One of St Barth’s top beach hotels has officially reopened, Caribbean Journal has learned.

Le Sereno, the Grand Cul de Sac luxury resort, began welcoming guests again this weekend.

The property has relaunched with a spa by Valmont, new family suites, a reimagine restaurant and an extended beach area called Plage.

“It has been a challenging year for the industry, but we are delighted to welcome our guests back to Le Sereno as we open our doors and launch exciting new experiences for the 2021 season,” said Samy Ghachem, Managing Director of Sereno Hotels. “We look forward to providing our guests with world-class cuisine inspired by our sister property, Il Sereno Lago di Como, design-driven accommodation with offerings for larger groups and of course, the relaxed and luxury service that they know and love. Guests can rest assured our staff and procedures are above and beyond, having just finished our season at Il Sereno in Lake Como.”

The hotel has also debuted new Suites Piscines, villa-style suites that come with their own private pools. They also can be connected, the property said.

“Following damage from the passing of Hurricane Irma my family decided to demolish and to completely rebuild from scratch a significant part of the property, including more than half the rooms and all the public spaces, while maintaining the iconic style of Le Sereno which has a devoted following amongst guests. In the true spirit of ‘plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose’, we worked on a complete rebuild, while keeping the essence of the hotel intact” said Luis Contreras, Founder of Sereno Hotels. “The craziness of this year meant our guests weren’t able to experience to the fullest this brand new hotel and we are looking forward to our grand reopening.”

The relaunch of the hotel is another boost for what seems to be a very strong holiday season on the island.

Planning to visit St Barth? The island’s health requirements entail showing proof of a negative PCR test within three days before arrival.
