Rum Journal: Dominica’s Hi-Rise Beach Bar

It’s on the water.

There’s sand.

It must be a beach.

While Roseau’s most popular beach bar isn’t actually on the beach, you might think so after a rum punch or two.

This is the Hi-Rise Beach Bar, a lively bar with a sand floor on the second story of an old building in Dominica’s capital, perched right above the ocean on the town’s main waterfront.

The bar, with a regular DJ, superb smoothies and a nice bar offering with everything from the aforementioned rum punch to local libations like Soca, has become one of the most happening spots in the capital.

It’s a sister bar to the legendary Ruins Rock Bar in the capital, with the same kind of friendly Dominican personality (and some of the Ruins Rock’s famous spiced rums, too).

The result? The best beach bar in Roseau.

Because with rum, vibes and music like this, this must be on the beach.

The Cayman Islands Just Broke a Tourism Record

By the Caribbean Journal staff

The Cayman Islands just broke a tourism record.

The destination welcomed more than 1.3 million combined visitors in the first half of 2018, the most ever for the Cayman Islands in the first six months of the year.

That was a total increase of 19.52 percent, with a total of 214,711 visitors in the period.

Air arrivals to the destination were up 15.9 percent for the first half, officials said.

I am very pleased that tourism performance in the Cayman Islands is registering consistent growth and continues to outpace projections,” said Cayman Islands Tourism Minister Moses Kirkconnell. “By applying the right marketing strategies, vision and spirit of collaboration to drive performance, the Cayman Islands tourism industry has maintained impressive, oftentimes, double-digit increases for a sustained period.”

Combined visitor spending in the period contributed more than $396 million USD to the national coffers.

That was an increase of just under $55 million compared to the same period last year.

“It is extremely encouraging to see growth in visitation for the first half of the year at a speed we have not seen since 2004,” said Director of Tourism. Rosa Harris. “As a Department, we are always looking for new, innovative ways to drive visitation while staying true to our commitment to creating sustainable tourism policies for the benefit of our people.”

Celebrity Cruises has launched construction on its newest ship, Celebrity Apex, a the Chatiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint Nazaire, France.

The second ship in Celebrity’s Edge series, Celebrity Apex comes in the wake of the line’s first ship, Celebrity Edge.

“Welcoming Celebrity Apex into our family with the leadership team was a very special moment, especially when we all signed the ship silhouette cut from the first piece of steel,” said Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, President and CEO of Celebrity Cruises.

“We are so grateful for our partnership with Chantiers de l’Atlantique and are thrilled to work on another very special ship together,” Lutoff-Perlo said. “The success and momentum for Celebrity Edge has been incredible, and with Celebrity Apex we will yet again show how we are taking our brand to the next level. We are offering our guests the best way to experience the world in modern luxury style.”

Celebrity Apex is expected to make her debut in spring 2020, with the third and fourth Edge series ships arriving in Fall 2021 and Fall 2022, respectively.

“We are proud to celebrate the launch of another incredible Edge Class ship with Celebrity Cruises,” said Laurent Castaing, General Manager of Chatiers de l’Antlantique. “The brand is known for many industry firsts so it’s fitting that Celebrity Apex is the first to participate in a steel cutting ceremony under our new name Chantiers de l’Atlantique, another milestone of the great partnership we have built together.”
