Hyatt Place Expands to Honduras

By the Caribbean Journal staff

Another Hyatt Place has opened its doors in the Caribbean Basin.

The new Hyatt Place San Pedro Sula is the first-ever Hyatt Place in Honduras, and the second Hyatt-branded hotel in the country.

The new property is owned by Latam Hotel Corporation, which has six hotels in the region, and is operated by Colombia-based GHL, a veteran operator in the Caribbean.

“As the Hyatt Place brand continues to grow in Latin America and the Caribbean, we are excited to add to the momentum by welcoming the second Hyatt Place hotel to Honduras,” said Luciano Julio, regional vice president of operations, Hyatt Place and Hyatt House. “Hyatt Place San Pedro Sula offers stylish social spaces and spacious guestrooms with separate work and sleep areas, which our multitasking guests will enjoy to accomplish what they need to do while visiting Honduras’ most important industrial city.”

The property has a total of 138 rooms, along with a “Gallery Kitchen Breakfast” restaurant, a 24-7 “Menu and Market” eatery, a coffee and cocktail bar, an outdoor pool and a 24-hour gym, among other amenities.

“We are very proud of the new Hyatt Place in San Pedro Sula,” stated Fernando Paiz, president of Latam Hotel Corp. “Our hotel is designed to cater to the business traveler’s needs with a modern design that celebrates the dynamism of this important manufacturing hub, strategically located in the Agora Mall, a boutique shopping center in the heart of the city.”

Hyatt Place has also recently expanded with three locations in Puerto Rico, while another Hyatt Place is planned in Aruba.

Guana Island Reopens in the BVI

By Alexander Britell

It’s beautiful, it’s quirky, it’s historic, it’s scenic and … it’s open.

One of the British Virgin Islands’ leading hotels has officially launched its soft reopening: Guana Island.

A spokesperson confirmed to Caribbean Journal that the first guests arrived to the resort on Aug. 1.

The private island getaway, home to 18 suites, has long been a rarefied, in-the-know retreat, renowned for its natural beauty, its commitment to local and organic sourcing and its pristine beaches.

Guana, which shuttered in the wake of last year’s storms, has concluded a significant restoration project that included refreshing all 18 suites; cleaning and restoring Guana’s landscaping, including its famous organic orchard; adding a new water filtration system and running all of its vital infrastructure below ground.

The orchard has also added three new greenhouses (including removable roofs) and even 100 new chickens who supply eggs to the Guana kitchen.

As several other luxe resorts continue with restoration work, Guana is now the British Virgin Islands’ signature luxury hotel option.

On-island sourcing has long been a focus.

It’s the latest step in what has been an inspiring tourism comeback for the British Virgin Islands, one that has seen more and more accommodations and attractions reopen each month.

Another private-island hotel, Scrub Island, is planning to reopen its resort component in October, while the Cooper Island Beach Club boutique hotel has already relaunched operations.

Looking for the perfect French Caribbean getaway?

It’s getting easier to get to the island of Martinique, with Norwegian Air’s increased service and up to six weekly flights on American Airlines.

Norwegian will be offering four flights each week from Fort Lauderdale to Martinique beginning Oct. 31; on Oct. 28, Norwegian will increase service to six flights per week from New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport to Martinique.

And there are even more new ways to experience the island, from a new Road Scholar educational trip to an all-inclusive program at the Club Med Buccaneer’s Creek.

Fort de France.

The Road Scholar program, “The Allure of Martinique: A Touch of France in the Caribbean” includes seven nights and eight days including air — along with an expert-led excursion to Martinique’s major heritage sites.

Caradonna Adventures is launching a dive program, from novice to expert-level experiences that include seven-night stays with five dive days.

In other words, it’s never been easier to get to one of the Caribbean’s best-kept secrets.
