San Juan among the best cities
Buenos Aires (Argentina), Santiago (Chile) and San Juan (Puerto Rico) are Latin America’s best cities to live in, according
to a report released today by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), the business unit of the British group “The
Economist” .
In the global list of 140 cities, led by fifth consecutive year by the Australian city of Melbourne (97.5%), Buenos Aires
(82.4%) ranked 62, Santiago (80.7%) 64 and San Juan (78.7%) the 67.
“Latin American cities get a great score on culture and environment, but not so much stability. Argentina, Brazil and
Venezuela have suffered unrest related to their difficult economic situation,” he told Efe Jon Copestake, EIU.
“In addition, many cities in Latin America have a high crime rate, thus affecting its stability. For example, Bogotá, the city
that has improved in the region in recent years, has a bad score in global stability “he said.
“The Economist” qualifies hundred metropolises on aspects such as education, stability, culture, environment,
infrastructure and healthcare.
Cities that have brought better results tend to be mediumsized
cities in wealthy countries with a low population density,
the report said.
In the study “ranking of most livable cities in the world”, 15 Latin American cities are located between 140 list made public
Tuesday.
Montevideo (Uruguay), San José (Costa Rica), Lima (Peru), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Asuncion (Paraguay), Sao Paulo
(Brazil), Panama City (Panama), Mexico City (Mexico), Quito ( Ecuador), Bogota (Colombia), Guatemala City (Guatemala)
and Caracas (Venezuela) complete the classification of cities in Latin America.
Melbourne has led the rankings for the fifth consecutive ahead of other so prized destinations like Vienna (Austria),
Vancouver (Canada), Toronto (Canada), Adelaide (Canada) and Calgary (Canada) year.
For “The Economist”, Kiev (Ukraine), Damascus (Syria), Dhaka (Bangladesh), Port Moresby (Papua New Guinea), Lagos
(Nigeria) and Tripoli (Libya) are the “least livable cities” in the world.
