A Recipe for a “Caribbean Mule”

Let’s be honest: Any sun-drenched Caribbean vacation is cause for celebration. And in the Caribbean, we celebrate with rum.

And guests of The Grenadines’ Pink Sands Club can celebrate last week’s official opening of the 26-suite luxury resort with an appropriately festive libation, their signature Caribbean Mule.

Caribbean Mule

Served to your stool in the ocean-facing infinity pool or delivered to your pink (naturally) chaise on the stunning sweep of Godahl Beach, the concoction is made with St. Vincent’s local Sunset Light Rum. Affectionately known simply as “SLR,” the smooth white rum goes perfectly with the mango and passionfruit juice; ginger beer; and lime that comprise the satisfying swig. Squeeze and then drop the passionfruit garnish into if for a refreshing tang, and then enjoy a hint of effervescence from the ginger beer, and a potent punch of “OMG!” delivered by the SLR. It’s (literally) a taste of the Caribbean and a taste of Canouan’s finest new hotel, delivered in every sweet sip.

We’ll drink to that.

Jamaica to Host Major Global Tourism Conference in 2017

Jamaica is set to host a major conference by the United Nations World Tourism Organization next year.

The country will be the host of the first-ever UNWTO Global Conference on Tourism Development and Sustainability, according to Jamaica Tourism Minister Ed Bartlett.

“Next year has been declared by the United Nations as the International Year for Sustainable Tourism Development and we are very excited that little Jamaica has been selected to host such a prestigious event,” he said.

The conference will bring together 157 tourism ministers from around the world, along with around 500 tourism-related companies.

It will be the first time that the private and public-sector arms of the UNWTO are coming together for a global event.

“This is also a huge opportunity for the value-added side of tourism, such as health and wellness network, gastronomy and entertainment and music,” he said.

A Caribbean Christmas Cruise

Thinking of a new way to spend Christmas in the Caribbean? Why not try a cruise?

Enter Azamara, which is offering a special eight-night Caribbean Christmas Cruise out of PortMiami.

Azamara offers a very different kind of Caribbean cruise experience, with a focus on boutique service in its 690-guest ships. The company also offers what it calls Destination Immersion, which gives guests more time in port and a better chance to get to know a given place, rather than a quick multiple-hour stop.

And the small size means you can often hit ports larger ships simply can’t access, like Nevis and Virgin Gorda.

Indeed, this year’s sailing takes you to some of the Caribbean’s loveliest ports, with stops in large ports like St. Thomas and smaller gems like St. John, US Virgin Islands and the lovely town of Gustavia, St. Barth.

Cruz Bay, the main town in St. John.

The Caribbean Christmas Cruise, which sails Dec. 19 to Dec. 27, makes its first stop in Charlotte Amalie (where it spends two nights), then to St. Thomas, followed by St. John, Virgin Gorda; Charlestown, Nevis, St. Barth before debarking in San Juan.

Amenities included on the trip include select standard spirits, international beers and wines, bottled water, soft drinks, specialty coffees and teas, shuttle service to and from port communities and concierge service, among others.

Suite guests receive English butler service, 235 complimentary internet minutes, complimentary dining in specialty restaurants and even afternoon tea service en-suite.

This year’s sailing is on the Azamara Quest ship.

Rum Journal: The Best Bar in Grand Cayman

Executed right, there is nothing quite like a hotel bar. While other bars prize crowds, bustle and numbers, a great hotel bar is about the art of refined hospitality, of making you feel pampered.

It is a place to retreat, a place to reflect. And, of course, a place to drink.

And when it comes to such bars, there is none better on the island of Grand Cayman than the Silver Palm bar at the Ritz-Carlton Grand Cayman.

With voluptuous design and a wonderfully clubby atmosphere, Silver Palm instantly envelops you in luxury, with the kind of service you expect from the RC brand without any trace of pretentiousness.

But the best part of this place is a very good rum list, easily the best on the island, home to everything from Havana Club Seleccion de Maestros to Rhum Clement VSOP (one of the few places to find rhum agricole in Cayman) to, if you’re feeling particularly indulgent, the Brugal Papa Andres.

They pair well with a nice selection of Cuban cigars (including the Cohiba Behika 54 and 56) you can puff on outside.

This is a full-fledged oasis and, hotel or otherwise, the best bar in Grand Cayman.

Lands’ End, Delta Partnering on Zac Posen Uniforms

Delta is upping its uniform game in a big way.

The carrier has announced a partnership with lifestyle brand Lands’ End to produce its new Zac Posen-designed uniforms.

The uniforms, which will be used by around 60,000 Delta employees worldwide, will be unveiled Oct. 18.

“The new uniform collection will be a strong brand statement and builds on our team members’ sense of pride as they serve our customers around the world,” said Gil West, Delta’s Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. “Fit, form, function and style are all integral to the uniforms for Delta people, and Lands’ End is the right partner to deliver on these things.”

The uniforms will be worn by ticket and gate agents, Delta Sky Club and in-flight service employees.

“This exciting project has leveraged the strengths of the Lands’ End team with the thoughtful and meticulous attention to detail they have put into the fit, function and design of the below-wing apparel collection to support the uniform needs of Delta,” said Joe Ferreri, Senior Vice President of Lands’ End Outfitters. “We are honored to collaborate with Delta Air Lines and be the supplier of their below-wing and above-wing uniforms.”

Delta last updated its uniforms in 2006 for above-wing employees.

“The employee uniform committee has been involved every step of the way,” said Chad Holmes, Delta ramp agent and CDUC member. “Lands’ End brought us innovative designs and fabrics, and their team was truly passionate about creating the most functional, high-quality uniform pieces.  Throughout the design process, they listened to our needs through job shadows and focus groups. Beyond the wealth of knowledge that Lands’ End brings, they have an amazing corporate culture that mirrors Delta’s of caring both for the customer and the employee.”
