A New Way to Taste Bonaire

Some of Bonaire’s top restaurants have banded together to create a new way to taste the island’s booming culinary scene.

It’s called the Bonaire Culinary Passport, and it offers visitors the option of having dinner at three restaurants: Cuba Compagnie, Ingridients Restaurant [sic] and It Rains Fishes.

At each restaurant, guests will get a passport stamp; when the passport is full, it can be handed it at any of the three restaurants in exchange for a typical Bonaire souvenir from The Saltman.

“Bonaire is known in the region for its quality restaurants,” said Maurice Adriaens, director of Tourism Corporation Bonaire. “This is something we as Tourism Corporation Bonaire want to promote much more. The Bonaire Culinary Passport is a great initiative which fits perfectly in our marketing of Bonaire as a culinary surprise.”

The three restaurants range from a taste of Cuba to Mediterranean fare to authentic seafood.

The Caribbean’s First Pizza Boat

A floating pizzeria?

In a spot off the southeastern coast of St Thomas, US Virgin Islands, it’s a reality.

Pizza Pi, which debuted in Christmas Cove last year, is the Caribbean’s first-ever pizza boat.

The brainchild of award-winning chef and culinary judge Tara Bouis, Pizza Pi is anchored in Christmas Cove Great St James Island, daily from 11 AM to sunset, with a menu including traditional New York-style pizza and Chef Tara’s specialty pies.

It’s been a boon to the area, drawing multitudes of sailors and yachters in search of a fresh-baked pie.

Indeed, Bouis says, the reviews have been terrific.

“The response to PiZZA Pi has exceeded our expectations!  Everyone loves pizza, especially good pizza,” she tells Caribbean Journal. “We have happy customers visiting us in rowboats and in multi-million dollar yachts.”

The menu includes pizzas, “snack stix” and even locally-made gelato.

Pizzas range from the “Plain Jane,” with house-made tomato sauce and a signature mozzarella blend, to the “Rasta Mon,” featuring red curry coconut sauce, flaked coconut, snap peas, red bell peppers and fresh mango.

The aluminum sailboat that houses the pizzeria was built by Bouis and husband Sasha themselves, featuring commercial-grade pizza ovens and an oversized pick-up window.

It’s a floating food truck of sorts, with ordering possible by phone (304-643-4674) or on VHF channel 16. You can even text your order.

“Shortly after we opened, PiZZA Pi claimed the #1 spot on Tripadvisor’s ranking of restaurants in St Thomas, and has remained there for well over a year now,” Bouis says. “We are really happy with what our idea has become and we have a fantastic crew working with us to keep PiZZA Pi great.”

How to Stay Longer at Petit St Vincent

It’s one of the most beautiful resorts in the Caribbean — the private island called Petit St Vincent in the heart of the Grenadines chain.

And now it’s even easier to stay there — for longer.

The resort has announced a new “7 for 5” offer, meaning if you book five nights you’ll get two nights free.

The offer includes three gourmet meals per day, all non-alcoholic beverages, early morning coffee and afternoon tea and complimentary butler room service.

It also gives you use of all non-motorized water sports and island facilities.

It’s good in 2016 and 2017, with blackout dates between Dec. 20 and Jan. 4, 2017.
