The Delfins Beach Resort.

Bonaire Yes, it’s one of the diving capitals of the Caribbean. But it’s so much more than that. The tiny Dutch Caribbean island of Bonaire has quietly become one of the coolest, most complete places to visit in the region, from its marvelous culinary scene to a slew of terrific hotels, from the signature Harbour Village to the sparkling new Delfins Beach Resort. There’s a special combination here: on the one hand, you have the feeling of being somewhere still undiscovered — but you also enjoy the sophistication and diversity of a well-developed travel destination.

Rum Journal: A Special Rum from Guadeloupe’s Reimonenq

There are rums, there are special rums and then there are rums for rum drinkers.

The third category isn’t for everyone, filled with rums of unique character, of sometimes too much strength, of uncanny personality.

That brings us to a rum from one of Guadeloupe’s venerable distilleries, Reimonenq.

Reimonenq has been putting out agricole expressions for more than a century, but its products tend to have a bit of a more robust, more raw quality than some of its neighbors in the Guadeloupe archipelago.

On a recent jaunt to St Martin, we tried Reimonenq’s Reserve Speciale, a six-year-old expression aged in oak barrels.

So what was it like?

The Reserve Speciale has a pale amber color, with an aroma of black pepper, candied fruit and vanilla.

And then things get interesting.

There’s a raw, lush flavor here, with notes of grass, of mango, of dried papaya and then fresh cane stalk and that Guadeloupe marzipan note we’ve spoken about before.

This is an agricole where you can still taste the original blanc base, a rum that’s mature but hasn’t lost the spirit of youth.

It’s fiery and peppery before mellowing, bold and brash and oozing with the personality of the island of Basse-Terre.

Simply, it’s a rum for rum drinkers.

Turks and Caicos Home Lists for $33 Million

By the Caribbean Journal staff

In one of the biggest real estate listings in the Caribbean in years, a beachfront estate at Turks and Caicos’ tony Parrot Cay private island has hit the market for $33 million.

And you may be familiar with the owner: Hollywood star Bruce Willis.

It’s simply called “The Residence,” and the 11-bedroom, 13.5-bathroom property is one of the most impressive in the Caribbean, with 18,000 square feet of interior space and 7.37 acres of land.

It spans three separate villas, along with four pools, a standalone yoga pavilion, a playground complex built to resemble a pirate ship and a spectacular private beach.

The Residence, which Willis first built in 2004, is set in what is one of the most exclusive enclaves in the Caribbean, home to celebrities like Donna Karan and, of course, the plum Como Parrot Cay resort.

The two-level main house, which underwent a full redesign last year, has more than 11,000 square feet of living space, while the second level has a master suite that spans the entire floor.

And then there are the amenities: COMO’s Private Estates management provides just about everything for owners, from personal butler service to housekeeping and property management.

Yes, this is your beach.

The party piece, though, is the private beach, with more than 1,100 feet of pure, unadulterated, pristine white sand.

It all adds up to a prime luxury destination in one of the region’s most sought-after communities.

It’s listed with Turks and Caicos Sotheby’s International Realty’s Nina Sigenthaler and Joe Zahm.
